The agri-food sector is fast becoming one of the most challenging, diverse, and dynamic career opportunities available to students. Feeding the world by 2050 will require an increase of almost 70% in food production, along with all of the challenges of getting high quality, healthy, safe food and nutrition from farms to consumer’s plates. And the agri-food sector is an emerging sustainable engine of economic growth and diversification ideally suited to Alberta and western Canada, where much of the future world food needs will be grown, processed, shipped and delivered to consumers around the world. Meeting these demands and opportunities will require students to be well versed and prepared to be critical thinkers, solution providers, entrepreneurs, managers, and agents of change in an essential field of commerce.

Finance is the study of financial decision making in investment, portfolio management and corporate finance as well as managing risk in a volatile economy. Finance incorporates the basics of economics, accounting and statistics through quantitative and qualitative methods.

The University of Lethbridge is a leader in Indigenous studies and management education. The certificate and degree programs are offered through an innovative partnership between the Dhillon School of Business and the Department of Indigenous Studies. The programs present a unique blend of studies in Indigenous governance and core business concepts. It provides Indigenous and Non-Indigenous graduates with skills to take on leadership and managerial roles in band administration, the not-for-profit sector, Indigenous liaison work, federal and international relations, oil and gas, agriculture or their own entrepreneurial enterprises.

Marketing, a combination of art and science, is the core of any business. It helps identify consumer needs; guides the development of new products, services or communications strategies, ensuring products and services are available where and when consumers want them; determines prices; and has the ability to adjust all of these for domestic and international markets. Almost one-third of North Americans are employed in marketing or marketing-related positions.

Political science is the systematic study of government, politics and political behaviour. It looks at how political conflict is organized and resolved, how rulers are chosen, how governmental decisions are taken and what policies and laws are determined and implemented. This can be done in settings ranging from Canada as a whole, to our provincial and local governments, to other countries to the relations among countries. It also considers how political actors understand their obligations towards one another and the degree to which decisions are ethically determined or out of convenience.
