Mitacs Globalink Research Internship (GRI) Pre-arrival Guide
Congratulations on being selected for the Mitacs Globalink Research Internship (GRI) at the University of Lethbridge!
We are excited to welcome you to the University of Lethbridge. This guide will help you prepare for your arrival, understand campus services available to you, and settle into your research placement with confidence.
At the University of Lethbridge, you will:
Work full-time on a research project under faculty supervision
Participate in campus and community activities
Engage with other international and domestic students
Your immigration documents will depend on:
- Your country of citizenship
- Length of stay (typically 12 weeks)
- Whether you require a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or an eTA
Mitacs provides immigration guidance and documentation. However, you are responsible for:
- Applying for the correct entry document
- Ensuring your passport is valid for your full stay
- Carrying your Mitacs award letter and host institution letter when travelling to Canada.
Important
Because you're coming to Canada to do work (research) for 120-days or less, you may quality for the 120-Day Work Permit Exemption Public Policy.
You need to ask for a Visitor Record at the Port of Entry into Canada, because you need to have documented proof that you are allowed to work in Canada while you're here. Without this, you will not be allowed to begin your research, and you may have trouble with opening your Canadian bank account.
You must not engage in employment outside your authorized internship activities.
If you have immigration questions specific to your entry to Canada, consult Mitacs and review official guidance from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
Arrival in Canada
