Canadian English Assistant in France

Program Overview

The Teaching Assistant Program in France (TAPIF) is a joint initiative of the French Ministry of Education, the Centre international d'etudes pedagogiques (CIEP) and the Cultural Services of the French Embassy. The program's goal is to strengthen English-language instruction in French schools by establishing a native speaker presence, while also providing Canadian Francophiles with excellent teaching experience and first-hand knowledge of French language and culture.

Applicant Requirements

Age: Candidates must be between 20 and 35 years old on the start date of the program

Education: be enrolled in university, having completed at least two years of university studies

Language Skills: Proficiency in French is required (minimum B1 level on Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). French majors and minors are encouraged to apply.

Citizenship: Candidates must be Canadian citizens residing in Canada at the time of application

Other: The selection process favors applicants who have prior experience teaching or working with children, teenagers, and/or adults. This is not required, but all applicants should demonstrate at least an interest in education.

Provide a clean criminal record

Salary

The net monthly salary of a teaching assistant is approximately 800 euros per month (12 hrs/week). This salary provides enough money to live in the lifestyle of a typical French student. Assistants are responsible for their own travel expemses. Personal funds are recommended for the initial period of contract.

Program Timeline

October to February 15: Application available online

In March up to the beginning of April: Applications are processed and reviewed by the French Embassy and the CIEP

In April: Official notifications, positive or negative, are sent to the applicants by email

Between June and August: French educational authorities send the official contract (entitled "arrete de nomination")

Between June and September: Visa procedure

October 1: Contract starts

April 30: Contract ends
