Prepare for Interviews

Employers who interview you want you to succeed! Take confidence from this if you start to get nervous. Remember that you can help them solve their hiring problem by explaining why you're the right fit for the job and company.

Before the Interview

  • Research the position and employer
  • Stay up to date with current events impacting the company and/or industry
  • Make a list of questions you might get asked and how you'll answer them
  • Prepare questions about the organization and the role to ask during the interview - this shows interest and initiative
  • Practice! Try role-playing with a friend or family member until you feel comfortable telling your stories and answering questions
  • Pre-plan your route so you know where you're going, how long it will take to get there, and where to park if you are driving

Day of/During the Interview

  • Dress for success - find out what is standard for your industry and typically dress one step above that
  • Arrive 5-10 minutes before the start of your interview
  • Items to bring with you:
    • Copies of the resume and cover letter you used for this particular position
    • Copies of your references
    • Copies of any other documents they've requested, like transcripts- consider using a folder or notebook to keep things neat
    • A pen and pad of paper
  • Be aware of your body language - sit up straight, don't fidget, keep an open posture
  • Speak from your experience as much as possible, using concrete examples of your skills
  • Ask for clarification if you do not understand a question
  • If you start to panic or don't know what to say, ask for a moment to consider the question thoughtfully or ask if you can come back to a question later
  • Be honest! Answer questions truthfully and to the best of your ability

After the Interview

  • Take notes after your interview to help you remember what topics were covered
  • Consider sending a thank you card or email to your interviewer(s)
  • View every interview as an opportunity to learn and improve
