Shining Student | Christy Bore

Christy Bore is actively engaged in research at the University of Lethbridge, participating in multiple independent studies and an undergraduate thesis in organic chemistry. In fact, her memorable experience includes a year spent in Dr. Jean-Denys Hamel's research lab, fostering her love for hands-on scientific exploration.

There's a lot more happening in research at ULethbridge than I initially thought; doing research as an independent study is a great opportunity to build connections and gain hands-on skills that apply to the theory taught in classes.

Meet Christy | Determined. Creative. Hard-working
Program: Bachelor of Science | Major: Chemistry
Hometown: Raymond, AB

Why did you choose ULethbridge?

I chose ULethbridge as It's located close to family, and I have many alumni in my family who spoke highly of their time at the University.

Did you know what you wanted to study before you came to ULethbridge?

I knew I wanted to study chemistry before coming to ULethbridge, and I’m still going strong with chemistry after three years.

Please tell us a bit about your experiential or work-integrated learning.

I have participated in three different independent studies, two in organic chemistry and one in biochemistry, and I've just begun an undergraduate thesis in organic chemistry. There's a lot more happening in research at ULethbridge than I initially thought; doing research as an independent study is a great opportunity to build connections and gain hands-on skills that apply to the theory taught in classes.

What is your most memorable ULethbridge experience so far?

My most memorable experience was being able to spend a year working in professor Jean-Denys Hamel's research lab as an independent study student and spending the summer working in his lab as a contract student.

How have your professors impacted your education?

Professors who have a passion for what they teach bring that into their work and make learning more enjoyable.

Christy is simply one of the best undergraduate researchers that I have had the chance to meet and work with. She is very inquisitive and constantly analyzes and re-analyses her data to seek deeper insight, and she never gives up when challenges arise. To me, there is no wonder why she sees herself becoming an analytical chemist (and an excellent one at that!). – Jean-Denys Hamel, Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry

Is there anyone else who has had an important influence on your ULethbridge experience?

Friends. Starting in my first semester, I met people who I still now have classes with, and they've become great friends. Also, teachers and professors such as Wayne Lippa, Dr. Jean-Denys Hamel, Dr. Susan Findlay, who have a huge passion for their work and teaching and make learning more fun

Have you received any scholarships and awards?

I've received a few scholarships and awards in my time at ULethbridge. They were very helpful as finances can be tough as a full-time student with a daughter. Having that additional income helps to reduce stress. I'm so thankful to all the donors who help students like me get a degree without being crippled by student debt.

Are you participating in any extracurricular activities?

I'm a co-treasurer for the Undergraduate Chemistry Society club. I've only been in this position since September of this year, but I'm looking forward to being able to share my love for chemistry with other people and build connections with other chemistry lovers.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to read and enjoy many different types of crafts, such as sewing, quilting, cross-stitching, etc. I also love to play board games.

What are your hopes/plans for the future?

I hope to have a job that I enjoy with co-workers I like. I'd love to work in a company where I get to spend a lot of time in a lab working with chemicals and making new things.

What advice would you like to give those who are about to begin their journey at ULethbridge?

Don't be afraid to talk to professors about research opportunities or students who are further in their university careers. Doing independent studies can be a great way to learn great hands-on skills and meet your university degree requirements!

Is there anything else you would like to share with us about your decision to pursue a university degree?

Being a full-time student whilst being a parent hasn't been easy for a single second. I don't have the luxury of being able to go home and relax and work on schoolwork. I get home from school, and it's straight to work being there for my daughter. I look forward to the day when I can get home from work and not have to worry about getting anything done outside of spending time with my family.
