Training for Researchers

On this page, you will find various resources to provide training for conducting human participant research in an ethical manner. Please reach out to the Office of Research Ethics at research.ethics@uleth.ca if you have questions, or if you have requests for other training opportunities!

TCPS 2 : CORE-22 (Course on Research Ethics)

The TCPS2 is the standard by which the Human Participant Research Committee (HPRC) determines that research protocols involving human participants are ethically acceptable. This free interactive online tutorial is recommended for researchers, students, Research Ethics Board members, research participants, and members of the general public. Faculty members are invited to consider using this tool as a teaching resource for their research methods courses. The tutorial requires a minimum of 3 hours to complete (and can be completed in multiple sittings) and provides a printable Certificate of Completion.

Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS2-2022)

The most recent version of The TCPS2 is the TCPS2-2022, and it outlines the requirements for research involving human participants, their data, and/or their biological materials. It also describes the requirements for the scope and approach, the consent process, fairness and equity in research participation, privacy and confidentiality, governance of Research Ethics Boards, conflicts of interest, multi-jurisdictional research, research involving the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples of Canada, qualitative research, clinical trials, human biological materials, and human genetic research.

Guidance in Applying the TCPS2-2022: Does Research Using Social Media (SM) Platforms Require REB Review?

The Tri-Agency Panel on Research Ethics (PRE) offers this guidance to further support research ethics boards (REBs) and researchers in the ethics review process and the ethical conduct of research that involves using information that exists on, or has been collected via SM platforms (referred to throughout this document as using SM platforms). The guidance is intended to support the community's educational initiatives and context specific considerations in the application of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans – TCPS 2 (2022) to research using SM platforms.

Supplementary Webinars to the TCPS2

Sponsored by the federal Panel on Research Ethics, several free webinars are available that complement the online tutorial by exploring important TCPS2 topics as identified by the research community. Topics for future webinars may be suggested by emailing the Secretariat on Responsible Conduct of Research.

TCPS2 Interpretations

The Interagency Advisory Panel on Research Ethics provides an interpretation service to support the needs of participants, researchers and Research Ethics Boards (REBs) in the effective use and understanding of the TCPS2. Responses to written requests for interpretation are grouped into various categories in a publicly accessible bank of interpretations.

CITI Program Training

The University of Lethbridge is a member of N2, and our membership includes access to many of the CITI Program's training modules in research, ethics, compliance, and safety training.
