Program description

Be inspired by art and visual culture and make your mark on the world. Work with active artists and scholars as you pursue your professional and creative goals in a collaborative environment.

The BFA-Art Studio program provides you with the opportunity to pursue contemporary art production through theoretical and practical scholarship.

Encompassing material, critical, and conceptual investigations, you work within an open studio context with faculty who are active artists and scholars.

Indigenous knowledge and cultural perspectives are integral to the program, while an extensive Visiting Speakers in the Art Program enriches the learning experience.

Develop your voice as an independent artist or arts professional through an intensive studio experience exploring technical, aesthetic, and theoretical studies necessary to pursue contemporary art.

Receive instruction in a range of methods and materials in drawing, painting, photography, installation art, performance art, spatial practices, printmaking, media, and electronic art. Senior students pursue self-directed studio work in a capstone course supported by faculty members of their choice.

Department of Art Showcase Art Open House Catalogue

Located in the University Centre for the Arts, the Art Department is supported by excellent studios and resourced with a wide range of outstanding technical workshops and digital facilities.

Work-Integrated Learning

You have full access to co-operative education, international exchanges, independent and applied studies as well as volunteer opportunities. uLethbridge is the only university in Alberta to offer co-operative education to all majors, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Professional Development

Gain professional art gallery experience through exhibition and curatorial opportunities in the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery, the Student Art Gallery, Penny Gallery, and in the broader Lethbridge arts community.

Senior Studio courses focus on creative art practice and production and allow you to complete a self-directed project. If you are interested in research, independent studio work, graduate studies, or simply want an academic challenge, you may add an Honours Thesis in your studies. The designation will appear on your official transcript and degree parchment.

During the summer months, unique studio residencies are available to BFA-Art majors, including the University of Lethbridge Gushul Studio Residency Program, located in the Crowsnest Pass, Alberta; and the Medalta Student Residency Program, located in Medicine Hat, Alberta.

Internship Opportunities
Expand your experiences and gain new perspectives beyond the art gallery and classroom. Focus on areas such as exhibition organization and installation, collections management, and public programming. Learn more about Art Internships and Residencies
