Location and Facilities

Gushul Residency Facilities

Artists and writers who are selected for a residency are housed in either the Gushul Artist's Studio or Writer's Cottage.

Artist's Studio

The Artist's Studio can accommodate two working artists with room for two additional non-working occupants. Priority will be given to visual artists, as the building provides an abundance of north light and the work space necessary to produce large works.

Writer's Cottage

The Writer's Cottage is adjacent to the Artist's Studio. The one-bedroom building can accommodate one to two people and is comfortably equipped with all living and working amenities.

Location in Blairmore, Alberta

The Gushul Artist's Studio and Writer's Cottage are situated in proximity to one another on a corner lot in the town of Blairmore, Alberta. The property sits at the heart of the Crowsnest Pass which encompasses a string of original coal mining towns built along the Trans-Canada Railway line, near the Alberta-British Columbia border in the spectacular eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains.

The historic town of Blairmore exudes old world charms and is within easy driving distance of urban centres such as Calgary, Lethbridge, and Banff. It is also near the Canada-United States border.

Because of its rural location, residents must arrange to have a vehicle for the duration of their residency period. Please note that charter bus transportation to this area is no longer available. Once on site, there are goods and services within walking distance from the Gushul property (restaurants, grocery stores, laundromat, pharmacies, shops, museums, etc.). However, taking full advantage of the many adjacent hiking trails, businesses, and cultural organizations in the region, requires vehicle access.

The University is located on traditional Blackfoot Confederacy territory. We honour the Blackfoot people and their traditional ways of knowing in caring for this land, as well as all Aboriginal peoples who have helped shape and continue to strengthen our University community.
