Practical and Research Skills

While pursuing your degree at the University of Lethbridge, there are opportunities to explore various fields of Chemistry and Biochemistry to discover your passion. You can gain valuable experience by working in research labs, taking part in the interdisciplinary course - iGEM or teaching Science to Grade 8-12 students through the Let's Talk Science Program.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry has many advanced instruments to enable cutting-edge research. These tools include nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infra-red, Raman, UVvisible, atomic absorption spectrometers, macromolecular x-ray diffractometer, isothermal titration calorimeter, and a surface plasmon resonance spectrometer. Students learn to use such instruments as a part of several undergraduate courses and during research opportunities.

These experiences will help you enhance your communication skills, critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, research skills, information management abilities, and attention to detail. By the end of the program, you will have acquired a strong grasp of how to summarize research findings, extensive experience in laboratory work, and comprehensive knowledge of scientific issues.
