SCN 2021 Undergraduate Summer Studentship Competition

The Scientific Office of the Seniors Health Strategic Clinical Network™ (SCN), Provincial Seniors Health and Continuing Care portfolio, is providing funds for an Undergraduate Summer Studentship Competition. The aim of this opportunity is to facilitate the pursuit of knowledge and build capacity related to the three priority areas of the Seniors Health SCN:

  • Aging Brain Care,
  • Frailty, Resilience, Aging-well: Late-life Transitions (FRAILTI), and
  • Anticipating an Aging Alberta.

Up to five awards will be available, providing a stipend of $1,500/month per applicant for up to 4 months during Summer 2021 (maximum $6,000 total per applicant). Eligible applicants should be enrolled in or accepted to a full-time undergraduate program in a health-related discipline. Applicants must be supervised or co-supervised by a researcher with an academic appointment at an academic institution in Alberta. The applicant’s area of research must be related to the Seniors Health SCN priority areas (above; for more information, see https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/assets/about/scn/ahs-scn-srs-roadmap.pdf). Holders of other full-time studentship awards granted by a provincial or national funding body (AIHS, CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC, etc.) are ineligible. Successful award recipients cannot accept more than one Summer Studentship, regardless of the funding source. They cannot be attending school or be employed in another full-time position at the same time as receiving the award. The funding is intended as a student stipend and is not designed to fund the research project or research activities. No university overhead costs can be deducted from the funds.

Applications are to be submitted electronically to Dr. Heather Hanson, Assistant Scientific Director, Seniors Health SCN (Heather.Hanson@ahs.ca), who will coordinate the competition. Applications must be submitted using a standardized application form; incomplete or late forms will not be considered. Please submit your application as a single pdf package. The deadline for submissions is 4pm on Friday, February 5, 2021.

Applications will be reviewed by a panel. The assessment criteria will include:

  1. The quality of the research proposal,
  2. Distinctive contribution to, and likely impact on, seniors’ health and healthcare,
  3. The quality of the research/training/supervisory environment, and
  4. Student’s academic record.

Formal letters of notification will be sent to applicants and their supervisors. The offer of award letters will include the terms and conditions of the award and the reporting requirements.
