Apply Online for a new Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)

What you need to know before you apply for a new Temporary Resident Visa

Foreign nationals from visa-required countries need a temporary resident visa (TRV) for entry to Canada. A TRV is an official counterfoil document (a special type of sticker) issued by a visa office that is placed in your passport to show that you have met the requirements for entry to Canada as a temporary resident. Most TRVs allow for multiple entries into Canada and are usually valid for the same length of time as your study permit.

Note: Holding a TRV does not guarantee entry to Canada or give you legal status. Your study/work permit is what gives you legal status in Canada.

  • If your initial study/work permit application from outside Canada is approved, IRCC will automatically issue a TRV - there is no separate fee or application required. IRCC will contact you to submit your passport to have the TRV added.
  • If you apply to extend your study permit OR apply for a post-graduation work permit and the application is approved, IRCC will not automatically issue you a new TRV. If your TRV has expired, you will need to submit a separate TRV application from inside Canada.

You can only apply for a TRV from inside Canada if you meet all the following criteria:

  • already are in Canada
  • hold a valid study or work permit
  • want to leave and return to Canada in the near future, and
  • have an existing visitor visa that’s expired, or is about to expire, or that was valid for only 1 entry

We recommend that you always have a valid TRV in case of an emergency/unexpected trip that requires you to travel outside of Canada. If your current TRV is expiring soon or has already expired, be sure to review IRCC processing times and apply for a new TRV well in advance of your travel plans. IRCC processing times do not include the time it takes to mail your passport to and from the visa office, so plan accordingly.

Tip: If you know that your passport will expire before you would complete your studies in Canada, you can renew your passport from inside Canada at your consulate or embassy. You should renew your passport well in advance (at least six months), as your study permit and TRV validity will not extend beyond your passport’s expiry date.

If you are inside Canada and applied to extend your study permit or applied for a post-graduation work permit, you can apply online for a TRV from inside Canada as soon as IRCC approves your application (even before you get your new study or work permit in the mail).

If you are applying for a new TRV before your study/work permit arrives in the mail, you must provide proof that IRCC approved your application, such as:

  • a screenshot of the approval message we sent to your online account
  • your application number
  • any other document that proves you have a valid and approved study or work permit extension

If you are outside of Canada and already have a valid study or work permit, but need to apply for a new TRV to return to Canada, you must follow the process to apply for the TRV from outside Canada. If you are submitting your TRV application from outside of Canada, we recommend that you book an appointment to speak with an International Student Advisor before proceeding and/or submitting the application.

If you are a Study Permit holder, you’ll need the following documents for the TRV application:

  • 1 envelope will be for IRCC to send your passport back: Standard-size envelope (260 x 159 mm)

Important: Write down the tracking number for each envelope so you can track them:

  • Use the tracking number for the letter-size envelope to find out when IRCC receives your passport.
  • Use the tracking number for the standard-size envelope to find out when IRCC will mail your passport back to you.

Preparing the package:

  1. On the standard sized (return) envelope, write your full mailing address in the “Deliver to” field.

  2. In the letter-size envelope being sent to IRCC, you will put:
  • your passport
  • a copy of your passport request letter from IRCC showing your unique client identifier (UCI) and application numbers
