Convocation Medals

At spring convocation, medals are awarded to recognize graduate and undergraduate academic achievement and performance. In addition, medals recognizing teaching and research for academic staff are also presented at convocation.

Undergraduate Level

The Silver Medal of the Governor General of Canada

This medal is awarded to the graduating student with the highest academic standing in a bachelor’s degree program.

The University of Lethbridge Gold Medals

The Faculties of Education, Fine Arts, Health Sciences and Management each award a gold medal to their most distinguished graduate for the academic year. The Faculty of Arts & Science awards two gold medals: one to an arts graduate and one to a science graduate.

The Alberta Teachers' Association William Aberhart Gold Medal in Education

This medal is awarded to the graduating student who has shown the highest general proficiency in the final two years of the bachelor of education program.

Graduate Level

The Gold Medal of the Governor General of Canada

This medal is awarded to the graduating student with the highest academic standing at the graduate level.

The School of Graduate Studies Medals of Merit

Inaugurated at Spring 2003 Convocation, these medals are awarded to a graduating student from each degree program for excellence in graduate studies.

Academic Staff

Excellence in Teaching Award

Established at the University in 1987, this medal is awarded to a member of the academic staff to recognize the central importance of teaching to the philosophy and goals of the University. Previously known as the Distinguished Teaching Award. 

Ingrid Speaker Medal for Distinguished Research, Scholarship or Performance

First awarded in May 1995, this medal recognizes the central importance of research, scholarship and performance to the philosophy and goals of the University.

Board of Governors Teaching Chair

Each year, the University recognizes one faculty member for teaching excellence through a two-year appointment as a Board of Governors Teaching Chair. 

Graduate Mentorship Award

This award recognizes faculty members who demonstrate excellence in graduate-level mentorship and who foster intellectual, professional and personal development of graduate students at the University of Lethbridge.
