After two days aboard the Norwegian research vessel Helmer Hanssen, we disembarked onto land for fieldwork. Mushamna, pictured, is located near the northernmost tip of Spitsbergen, Svalbard at 79.66N°. Though it was early September, winter had already arrived, and we spent a chilly day retrieving cores from the lake.

Castle on the Hill
Nadine Thyssen
Bled Castle stands high over Lake Bled and a typical Slovenian church. It is the oldest castle in Slovenia, used for defence in the Medieval period. The area is one of the most picturesque places I have visited.

Mountain's Embrace
Niayesh Allahdad
Kang, a 3,000-year-old Iranian village, nestles in the mountains like a stairway to the sky. Its terraced homes, built atop each other, reflect ancient ingenuity, blending seamlessly with nature's embrace. This living history whispers tales of resilience and harmony amidst breathtaking peaks..

Highway Glow

On the drive from Calgary to Edmonton with my brother, I caught this moment on Queen Elizabeth II Highway near Crossfield. The sky was lit up with amazing pink and blue colors, spreading across the fields below. A car is just visible in the corner, its motion adding energy to the calm scene. It was like capturing a pause in time, where nature's beauty meets the rush of the road.

Chai Albaloo
Niayesh Allahad
During winter's chill, northern Iranians brew 'Chai Albaloo,' a cherished cherry tea traditionally prepared over fire and charcoal. On Rasht's cold streets, friends and families gather, sharing warmth and stories over steaming cups, inviting tourists and locals alike into their vibrant traditions and heartfelt connections.

Many countries have left their mark on Svalbard, an archipelago near the North Pole. Here, Russian guide Olga leads visitors through the Soviet mining town of Pyramiden, which was abandned in 1998. The cold Arctic air has left it frozen in time. She carries a rifle for polar bear protection.

A City Under Water
Nadine Thyssen
A crowd gathers at the Hungarian parliament to witness historic flooding in Budapest. Water levels rose by about 8 m, covering roads and reaching the steps of parliament. A woman stretches to take in the scene and, in true Hungarian fashion, two men sit with beers on the water's edge.

Reunification
Ember Hess
A room filled with notes written by South Korean citizens wishing for a peaceful reunification between North and South Korea, located at the Ganghwa Peace Observatory.
