Leah Koutroumanos

I am describing elusive moments of my everyday experience. The watercolors and oil paintings that I make are of objects as they exist in the instance of the painting’s realization. For this reason, each work is painted from life. This process is relevant to the theme of the lived moment. Through representational imagery I am investigating an object's relationship with time, timelessness, history, duration and record. The sensation of my interaction with the object and with the paint is inherent in the nature of the rendering. This imposed presence ratifies the intimacy within the recorded moment, allowing the painting to act as a testimony to the lived experience. Unifying themes include my own taxonomy, residue, the unexpected, the mundane and the ‘stumbled upon’. I am looking to ask and answer questions about aesthetic assessment of the everyday and the potential neutrality of the explicitly representational.
