Volunteer Opportunities - International Centre

Volunteer with the International Centre

The International Centre offers various opportunities for students to volunteer while supporting an international student.

You can mentor an international student during their first semester at the university, tutor an English language student, be a Peer Partner for an ESL student, or be a 'Buddy' for an exchange student.

Through these programs, you can gain mentoring and leadership skills in a cross‐cultural environment, learn about other cultures and countries, as well as gain insight into Canadian culture!

International Student Mentorship Program

The International Student Mentorship Program is a volunteer peer-mentor program in which new international students are matched with continuing uLethbridge students who can provide ongoing advice and information about life at the university and in Lethbridge.

Buddy Program for Exchange Students

The Buddy Program is a friendship program in which uLethbridge students are connected with incoming exchange students to help ease their transition to Lethbridge and to the university.

Volunteer at International Centre's Events

The International Centre hosts International Education Week, the Annual International Dinner and other events to celebrate diversity on campus. Volunteering at any of our events helps you increase your intercultural awareness and build your resume while making new friends.

English Language Partner Program

The English Language Partner Program pairs English as an additional language students with a student volunteer from the University to help improve their language skills and knowledge of Canadian customs. The program focuses on conversational English skills and cultural exchange. Partners meet for approximately one hour per week.

Writing Tutoring Program

Our volunteer tutors provide useful and informed feedback on English for Academic Purposes (EAP) students’ writing at different stages of the writing process. Tutors help EAP students get started, find appropriate sources, brainstorm ideas, create outlines, work on thesis statements, structure & organize texts, maintain coherence & cohesion, and self-assess produced texts.

Peer Partner Program

Peer Partners are assigned to students who are studying English as an additional language for a short term, usually in the summer. Peer Partners commit to spending one to two hours a week with their visiting student.

The English Language Institute puts out a call for volunteers every year when new groups are scheduled to visit. Check back soon.
