About

Spain has a population of about 48 million and is the second largest country in the European Union, after France. Colorful and diverse landscape are present throughout the country: mountains, a vast plateau, beautiful beaches, and the Canary and Balearic Islands. Spain has a rich history, which can be appreciated in every city through its monuments and museums, starting from pre-Roman times, through the Middle-Ages and the Renaissance, to present day. Modern day Spain balances tradition and modernity. Spain's vibrant cultural life can be experienced through its excellent tapas, an infinite number of local traditions like bull fighting, and its many traditional costumes and celebrations.

Jaén is a city located in the Andalusia region of Spain. Known as the "World Capital of Olive Oil," it is famous for its extensive olive groves and olive oil production. The city is adorned with impressive architecture, including the stunning Jaén Cathedral and the Castle of Santa Catalina, offering panoramic views of the surrounding picturesque mountains. Jaén is a medium-sized city, where almost everything is within walking distance or at least only a short bus trip away. It has many educational and sports facilities, and is located near the Renaissance towns of Úbeda and Baeza and the glorious National Park of Cazorla, a great hiking and wild-life viewing area. Students can also enjoy winter sports in nearby Sierra Nevada (90 minutes' drive) and visit the seaside resorts of the eastern Costa del Sol (two hours' drive). Jaén's Town Council organizes many cultural activities, some of which are held in the University Campus.

The Universidad de Jaén is a public institution offering 35 different degrees, 28 doctorates and a few masters programs. Internationalization plays a significant role on the university campus, evident by the university's 87 bilateral exchange agreements. UJA's history as an educational institution dates back to the Renaissance.

Rather, students will be required to successfully complete a certain number of ECTS (European Transfer Credit System) credits to earn U of L credit equivalency. Typically, a full course load is 30 ECTS, and 6 ECTS = 3 U of L credits.

Requirements

You are eligible for this exchange if you are:

  • A full-time U of L student
  • In at least the 2nd year of your program
  • In good academic standing, with a GPA of 2.5 or higher

Although it is not a requirement, it is recommended that students have at least a 3.0 GPA in their U of L Spanish language courses.

Students wishing to study in Spain must obtain a MANDATORY study visa. For more information about the application process click here.

The visa application must be submitted at the Consulate General of Spain in Toronto. It is important to apply early, as the application process may take up to one month.
