Universidad de Granada

Spain has a population of about 48 million and is the second largest country in the European Union, after France. Colorful and diverse landscape are present throughout the country: mountains, a vast plateau, beautiful beaches, and the Canary and Balearic Islands. Spain has a rich history, which can be appreciated in every city through its monuments and museums, starting from pre-Roman times, through the Middle-Ages and the Renaissance, to present day. Modern day Spain balances tradition and modernity. Spain's vibrant cultural life can be experienced through its excellent tapas, an infinite number of local traditions like bull fighting, and its many traditional costumes and celebrations.

Granada is located in the Southern province of Andalucia and has earned a reputation of being one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It is a city of rich history, many attractions and interesting traditions. The city is home to some of the best ski slopes in Europe. Tours to Granada must include a visit to the Alhambra – a snow white castle, surrounded by magnificent gardens, whose architecture is reminiscent of stone lacework. It is the most renowned building of the Andalusian Islamic historical legacy. Although Granada has roots in livestock and agriculture, its main source of income today is tourism, particularly from skiers and snowboarders.

The Universidad de Granada, founded in 1531, is a public university that enrolls approximately 80,000 students. The university's Center for Modern Languages receives over 10,000 international students each year. The University has a vibrant presence in the city of Granada, benefiting from the distinctive beauty of its environment and a privileged geographical location due to its proximity to the Sierra Nevada and the Mediterranean coast.

In Granada, there are four university campuses, as well as the “Campus Centro”, in which all the centres spread throughout the historic part of the city are brought together.

The European academic structure varies from the North American system. Courses completed at a European exchange partner will not be transferred back to the U of L on a course-for-course basis. Rather, students will be required to successfully complete a certain number of ECTS (European Transfer Credit System) credits to earn U of L credit equivalency. Typically, a full course load is 30 ECTS, and 6 ECTS = 3 U of L credits.

You are eligible for this exchange if you are:

• A full-time U of L student
• In at least the 2nd year of your program
• In good academic standing, with a GPA of 2.5 or higher
• Fluent in Spanish (minimum B2 level)

The visa application must be submitted at the Consulate General of Spain in Toronto. It is important to apply early, as the application process may take up to one month.

Private Accommodations

• UGR's Accommodation Office provides information for students to arrange their own accommodations through their accommodation portal. The portal includes rooms in residence halls and private room listings within Granada.

It is MANDATORY for students to present health insurance valid for their whole period of stay upon arrival to Spain. Students must cover the costs of private medical care and then apply for a refund of the payment from their insurance company.

All international students are advised to obtain accident insurance through their own insurance agencies before arrival to Spain.
