This combined program takes five years to complete and you graduate with two degrees. Your BA (Music) degree provides you with thorough training on your chosen instrument and equips you with the music theory, history and aural skills necessary to be a well-rounded musician, and the Education degree (BEd) consists of three professional semesters providing practical experience through supervised placements in schools.
Students who are interested in teaching elementary school are encouraged to pursue the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education degree. The flexibility of this stream will allow you to gain a diversified set of qualifications that better meets the needs of multi-subject teaching common in elementary schools.

The Bachelor of Arts (Music)/Bachelor of Education stream requires less music courses and provides more flexibility for you to gain a diversified set of qualifications in many different areas.
With hands-on experiences in performance and training on your chosen instrument, as well as learning in music theory, history, literature and ear training, you develop applied skills in every facet of the discipline.

What you need to know as a current student in this program
The Faculty of Fine Arts and Faculty of Education jointly offer a 50-course (150.0 credit hour) Combined Degrees program leading to the degrees Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Education (BEd). Upon successful completion of the Combined Degrees program, you receive the BA (Music) degree from the Faculty of Fine Arts and the BEd degree from the Faculty of Education.
The Bachelor of Arts (Music)/Bachelor of Education stream is a terrific option for teaching in an elementary school setting.
For the BA (Music) program there are some must-take courses that provide a great foundation for your major, but you'll have a lot of flexibility in choosing your courses for the path and creative study you wish to take. Refer to your Program Planning Guide in your calendar year for the courses you'll need to take and choose from within the Music lists, Music Studio lists, Music Ensemble Activity lists and as Electives.
- at least 30 courses (90.0 credit hours) with cumulative and graduation grade point averages of at least 2.00;
- 16 required music courses (48.0 credit hours);
- at least 10 courses (30.0 credit hours) at the 3000/4000 level;
- Completion of the Liberal Education List Requirement.
Remember that program requirements vary depending on the calendar year, which is usually the year of admission (or readmission) to ULethbridge. Therefore, requirements may differ from year to year even within the same major.
