Emerging Voices Playwriting Prize

Generously supported by ULethbridge Chancellor and alumnus Terry Whitehead (BA '94), the Emerging Voices Playwriting Prize aims to encourage excellence and development in student playwriting. This competition is open to high school students in grades 9 - 12 attending school in Southern Alberta. One entry per student per competition. Student group entries welcome. Playwriting submissions will be judged by a pre-selected blind jury.


Value: Various. First prize $650 cash prize and a $500 tuition credit for studies at ULethbridge, second prize $250, and third prize $150. The winning play will also receive a staged reading at Vibe Fest, held at the University of Lethbridge on April 18, 2026. Second place will receive a $250 prize, and third place will receive a $100 prize. All three plays will be recognized at an award ceremony at Vibe Fest. 

Eligibility: Students must be in high school (grades 9-12) and live in Southern Alberta (Zone 6: Horizon, Lethbridge, Palliser, Livingstone, Westwind, Prairie Rose, Medicine Hat (Public and Catholic), Holy Spirit, Grasslands school divisions). Plays may be co-written by multiple students. The prizes will be divided equally among the authors. One entry per student or group.

Criteria:

  • Script must be intended for the stage (not television, film or other media).
  • Plays must have a reading time no longer than 10 minutes and more than 1750 words in length.
  • Scripts must be submitted in English, with translation of any non0English words or phrases.
  • Entries must be original. No generative AI tools can be use to create part or all of the play.

Emerging Voices Playwriting Prize Entry Form

Submissions must adhere to the following:

  • Completed Entry Form submitted as a separate attachment, including submitting all playwright information at this link.
  • The playwright's name must not appear anywhere on the script. Any appearance of the playwright's name or initials on any part of the script will disqualify the entry.
  • All scripts must be submitted via email; no fax or physically handed-in versions will be accepted.
  • Submit ONE copy of the play, in Microsoft Word via email to the Department of Drama by the deadline.
  • Each page must be numbered and include the title of the play. Leave a space between speaking parts.
  • Failure to meet all rules and regulations will result in disqualification.
