Advising FAQs

Students are responsible for registering in classes each term. It is very important students register as early as possible when their registration window opens because courses can fill quickly. See wait-listing for information on registering assistance with full/closed courses.

General FAQs

When specified on the Program Planning Guide, students who fall into either of the two categories below are not required to take WRIT 1000 or ENGL 1900. Instead, they can substitute another course that fits within their program requirements.

  1. A grade of 80% or higher in AB high school English Language Arts 30-1 (or equivalent 5-credit course); OR
  2. Successful completion of the Canadian Academic English Langauge (CAEL) challenge test.
    • The CAEL test, measures the English langauge proficiency of students planning to study at Canadian universities and colleges.
    • You can find preparation materials and instructions for taking the test by clicking on this link: http://www.cael.ca/.
    • Successful completion for Dhillon School of Business programs means you must achieve a band score of 70 or higher.

If specified and if you fall into either of these two categories and prefer to take a course other than WRIT 1000 or ENGL 1900, contact a Dhillon advisor as soon as possible so that the necessary waivers can be added to your records and you can register for courses that have WRIT 1000 or ENG 1900 as a prerequisite/corequisite.

Liberal Education List Requirement

In keeping with the liberal arts focus of the University, all students in undergraduate degree programs must complete the General Liberal Education List Requirement. The Lib Ed List Requirement ensures that students gain knowledge, experience, and perspective from a wide variety of areas. The Lib Ed List Requirement is an opportunity to explore new disciplines, to investigate career paths, and to develop valuable skills to complement your degree.

Liberal Education List Requirement courses are divided into three lists:

  1. List I Fine Arts & Humanities
  2. List II Social Science
  3. List III Science

When selecting Lib Ed List Requirement courses, you should choose courses that will complement your major and career goals. Refer to the official Liberal Education Lists found in the Academic Calendar when registering as not all U of L courses are designated as List I, II or III. For example, only some music courses count as a List I - Fine Arts and Humanities. To tell if a course is a Fine Arts and Humanities, Social Science, or Science Lib Ed List Requirement, you can also look in the Timetable in the attributes field.

See the following sample timetable entry for GEOG 1000, which is a Science Lib Ed List Requirement:

-------------------------------------------------------------

Introduction to Physical Geography - _____- GEOG 1000 - A Associated Term: ______
Registration Dates: ____________ to ____________
Levels: Undergraduate, Graduate, Audit
Attributes: Science Lib Ed Req, Introductory Course (0500-1999), Arts & Science course

--------------------------------------------------------------

Bachelor of Management (B.Mgt.)

In the 40 course Bachelor of Management (B.Mgt.) degree, 12 Liberal Education (Lib Ed) List Requirement courses are required as follows:

  • 4 List I Fine Arts & Humanities
  • 4 List II Social Science
  • 4 List III Science

Lib Ed requirements not filled by core or major courses are specified on the Program Planning Guide (e.g. "Elective - Fine Arts & Humanities"). Only 4 courses from one discipline (e.g. ECON, MGT, MUSI) and only 4 courses from EDUC, ABHL, ADCS, HLSC, NURS, PUBH, TREC, and MGT may be counted toward the Lib Ed List Requirement. Cross-listed courses count toward both limits (e.g. MGT 2070/ECON 2070 counts as both a MGT and an ECON).

Post-Diploma Bachelor of Management (B.Mgt.)

The Post-Diploma Bachelor of Management (B.Mgt.) uses a modified Lib Ed comprised of 10 Liberal Education List Requirement courses as follows:

  • 4 List I Fine Arts & Humanities
  • 2 List II Social Science
  • 2 List III Science
  • 2 any list (List I, II, or III)

Lib Ed requirements not filled by core or major courses are specified on the Program Planning Guide (e.g. "Elective - Fine Arts & Humanities"). Only 4 courses from one discipline (e.g. ECON, MGT, MUSI) and only 4 courses from EDUC, ABHL, ADCS, HLSC, NURS, PUBH, TREC, and MGT may be counted toward the Lib Ed List Requirement. Cross-listed courses count toward both limits (e.g. MGT 2070/ECON 2070 counts as both a MGT and an ECON).

Other

Bachelor of Management as a Second Degree, Management Certificates, and Post-Bachelor Certificates in Accounting programs do not require Liberal Education List Requirements.

It is important to check prerequisites (prereqs) and corequisites (coreqs) for each course before registering because students without the appropriate prereqs and coreqs will be prevented from registration or removed from the course. Students who believe they may have an equivalent prereq or coreq may apply for a prerequisite waiver by contacting the Faculty/School advising office that offers the course that requires the prereq or coreq for more information.

Prerequisite

A prerequisite is a course that must be taken before another course.  For example, STAT 1770 is a prerequisite to MGT 2070/ECON 2070 so it must be taken before MGT 2070/ECON 2070.

Corequisite

A corequisite is a course that must be taken before or at the same time as another course.   For example,  ECON 1010 is a coreq with MGT 2400, which means ECON 1010 must be taken either before or at the same time as MGT 2400.  When registering, for both courses in the same term, a student must register in ECON 1012 before  registering in MGT 2400.

Prereq and Coreq Information

Prereqs and coreqs are listed on the Timetable after clicking on the course CRN and then on Course Detains & Prerequisites.  They are also found with course descriptions in the Course Catalogue.
