Description

Curriculum Alignment

Biology

Yeast FermentationIn this 3 hour laboratory exercise, students will explore the effects of different sugars and glucose concentrations on yeast fermentation. Using their collected data, they will relate their observations to their prior knowledge of cellular respiration and fermentation, and do preliminary work with respect to writing a full scientific report.
Biology 20: Unit C: Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration
Scientific Method and Scientific Writing Skills

Biology

Catalase Activity
In this 90 minute laboratory exercise, students will explore catalase activity in breaking down hydrogen peroxide under various conditions. Depending on time constraints, students can test the effect of pH, temperature, and catalase concentration on activity. They will then graph their results to show the ideal conditions for the catalase enzyme.
Biology 20: Unit D: Human Systems
Scientific Method and Scientific Writing Skills

Chemistry

Acetic Acid in Chewing Gum
In this 2-3 hour application of chemistry to the food industry, students will measure the citric acid level in chewing gum. They will play the role of an analytical chemist doing quality control by determining the amount of citric acid using an acid/base reaction between citric acid and sodium hydroxide. Using stoichiometry, they will calculate the ratio of sodium hydroxide used in the titration to the amount of citric acid present in the sample.
Chemistry 20: Unit C: Acids and Bases
Chemistry 20: Unit D: Chemical Changes

Chemistry

Climate Change

In this 2 hour lab experiment, students will apply their knowledge of thermochemical changes to calculate the heat of combustion and Energy/kg of a variety of alcohols. Especially applicable to today's search for alternative fuel sources, calculating the fuel efficiency of various alcohols will help students learn how alternative non-fossil fuels will reduce the effects of climate change.

Chemistry 30: Unit A: Thermochemical Changes
Chemistry 30: Unit C: Organic Compounds

Physics

Faraday's CageIn this 1-2 hour activity students will explore the concept of a Faraday Cage both in blocking electromagnetic waves and protecting objects inside from electrical discharge. Students will work through theoretical proofs and demonstrations in order to explore the question: "Are passengers safe if a car is hit by lightning?"
Physics 30 Unit B: Forces and Fields
Physics 30 Unit C: Electromagnetic Radiation

Physics

Sound Waves

In this 1 hour activity, students will calculate the experimental speed of sound while exploring the fundamental and resonant frequencies of sound within a resonance tube. They will then apply their knowledge of waves to explore noise cancellation.

Physics 20 Unit D: Oscillatory Motion and Mechanical Waves
