ELEMENTS. CHEMICALS. MINERALS. MOLECULAR. PHYSICAL.
Chemistry is often called the central science as it deals specifically with the 112 elements that comprise all matter. There are five branches of chemistry: analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry and theoretical chemistry. The primary focus of the program is to provide you with extensive theoretical knowledge in all five branches of chemistry while enhancing your technical and practical skills with hands-on experience and research opportunities.
The Departments of Chemistry & Biochemistry and Biological Sciences jointly offer a multi-disciplinary major in biochemistry for the 40-course Bachelor of Science (BSc). You can also select a general major in the sciences and choose biochemistry courses as options. Biochemistry will help you develop a strong background in the basic sciences and extensive laboratory skills. Thereby, it provides background for a diverse range of careers in the life sciences, including professional programs such as medicine and veterinary medicine.
The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is home to many advanced instruments which enable cutting-edge research. These tools include nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), infra-red, Raman, UVvisible, atomic absorption spectrometers, macromolecular x-ray diffractometer, isothermal titration calorimeter, and a surface plasmon resonance spectrometer.

Department Highlights
University of Lethbridge students dive into biochemistry
Two ULethbridge students dived into biochemistry in a big way over the summer and became the first Indigenous undergraduate students to work at the Canadian Center for Hydrodynamics (CCH) with analytical ultracentrifugation (AUC).
Demetra (Demi) Good Rider and Thunder Crowshoe completed the Indigenous Student Success Certificate (ISSC) earlier this year. The certificate is designed to help Indigenous students make a smooth transition to university life. They enjoyed their biology and chemistry courses, and Crowshoe jumped at the chance when Beth Grier, a student recruitment officer, informed him that biochemistry professor Dr. Borries (Bo) Demeler was seeking students to work at the CCH.
Meet Dr. Peter Dibble, Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry
Dr. Peter Dibble was born and raised in Ontario. His love of chemistry took him to the University of Waterloo's Co-op Chemistry Program following high school. His experiences in the program made him a big proponent of co-op education. In his job placements, he worked in various sub-disciplines of chemistry. Through these postings, he tested fish for mercury, did process stream analysis, food analysis and agricultural pesticide research. At his last job, he discovered organic synthesis and that led to his PhD work.
The 2026 winner of the Montréal Medal/Médaille de Montréal
The Montréal Medal/Médaille de Montréal is presented as a mark of distinction and honour to a resident of Canada who has shown significant leadership in or has made an outstanding contribution to the profession of chemistry or chemical engineering in Canada.
As a leader in computational chemistry in Canada, Stacey Wetmore is heavily sought after to serve on national and international research, policy, and editorial boards, scientific peer–review panels, society committees, and conference organization panels. She has served on many national and international boards that provide oversight for funding programs, govern the use of computer equipment for research, and generally support the scientific community.
