Program description

The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Lethbridge offers the Bachelor of Nursing program in collaboration with Lethbridge College. Students engage in theory, lab, and clinical practice experiences in the areas of continuing care, acute medicine and surgery, rural and sub-acute care, pediatrics, maternal/child and family health, mental health and addictions, and community health.

The program provides the essential background to write the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) to become a Registered Nurse (RN)."

We also offer a Bachelor of Nursing After Degree program for applicants who have already completed an approved undergraduate degree. Learn more

Admission requirements

General-ALL-ALL

​For admission, Canadian high school students in Alberta must have completed five of the following courses with a minimum 65% average across them:

  • English Language Arts 30-1
Three of these courses
  • Aboriginal Studies 30
  • Art 30 or Art 31
  • Biology 30
  • Chemistry 30
  • Choral Music 30, General Music 30, or Instrumental Music 30
  • Dance 35
  • Drama 30
  • Mathematics 30-1 or Mathematics 30-2
  • Mathematics 31
  • Physics 30
  • Science 30
  • Social Studies 30-1
  • Five credits in Advanced-level CTS Computer Science (CSE)
  • One or more distinct languages at the 30 level
One additional
  • That has not already been used
  • May be from the list above
  • Must be at the 30 level
  • Must be worth at least five credits (multiple courses worth a total of five or more credits can be used)
  • Cannot be a Special Project

This program also requires

Four of the courses you include must be:

  • Biology 30
  • Chemistry 30
  • Mathematics 30-1 or 30-2
  • English 30-1 with a minimum 60%

You must also meet a meet a Spoken English Language Proficiency (SELP) requirement.

You should also have a competitive average. Competitive average is calculated on five courses - four required high school courses indicated above plus one other 30-level course.

If you do not have the necessary high school courses for admission you can apply to the Nursing Preparation Program. It provides access to courses that can be used for admission towards the B.N. program as well as courses that will count towards the B.N. program, if admitted.

For courses currently in progress, mid-point grades must be submitted by the interim document deadline of April 1.

Admission Decision Documents must be received by April 1 and Final Documents by June 15. ​

Due to the collaborative nature of the Bachelor of Nursing program, students pay tuition and fees to Lethbridge College for the first two years of the program, and to the University of Lethbridge for the final two years.

Refer to the tuition and fee information at both Lethbridge College and the University of Lethbridge. Actual tuition and fee amounts will be reflected at time of registration.

Nursing students may be eligible for scholarships and awards at Lethbridge College in the first and second year of the program.

The Faculty of Health Sciences will consider a limited number of exceptionally qualified applicants with previous health care related experience (who also meet the regular BN admission requirements) on a case-by-case basis. Applicants who are seeking admission based on this experience should submit the online application as normal and must also submit the following documents by April 1:

  • A letter of intent, describing the nature of previous work experience as it relates to nursing and the reason for pursuing nursing;
  • A letter of reference from an employer; and
  • A resume detailing relevant work, volunteer and life experience.

Note: Number of years, currency, and relevance of  work experience will be considered
