Sydney ANDRES

In my paintings I explore my relationship with animals through mark making, texture, and mixtures of bright, earthy and non-local colours. The animals are often painted moving away as I see them in nature. Growing up in a rural environment I have become close to both domestic and wild animals. Because of my familiarity with animals, I am able to depict the forms as I remember them in a glimpse. I focus on the natural and physical environments in relation to my internal and spiritual connection with the animals.

My process begins with underpainting upon which I build up a thick, textural surface. The animals’ organic forms may visually fuse and appear to move together; forming an unnoticed beauty in the animals’ shapes highlighted by gestural brush strokes.
