Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program 2024

The 2024-2025 Banting PDF competition has been launched, and the application is available on ResearchNet! Please consult www.banting.fellowships-bourses.gc.ca for further details.

Canada’s three federal granting agencies jointly administer the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship Program: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) administers the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships (PDF) program. It is responsible for paying awards per the policies and regulations outlined in the Tri-Agency Research Training Award Holder’s Guide.

Unique Application Requirements

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program is distinguished by its emphasis on the synergy between an applicant’s merit and potential to launch a successful research-intensive career and the host institution’s commitment to the research program and environment. As such, an applicant’s application to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program must be completed in full collaboration with the proposed supervisor and host institution.

Duration: Two years

Step 1: Expressions of Interest

Potential applicants who have identified a proposed Faculty Supervisor, and are interested in applying to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships competition, must submit an Expression of Interest via email to postdoc@uleth.ca as part of the internal selection process. The Internal Deadline for Expressions of Interest is July 10, 2024. Should you be unable to meet the internal deadline, please reach out to Angela.rosenau@uleth.ca.

Expressions of Interest must include:

  • Draft copies of the research proposal, significance of research contributions and significance of leadership contributions requirements
  • Self-declaration that the candidate meets the eligibility requirements
  • Postdoctoral Fellows' CCV (CCV is preferable, but a CV is acceptable)
  • Faculty Supervisor's CCV (CCV is preferable, but a CV is acceptable)
  • Explanation of why the applicant would be competitive and merits a Banting award. In approximately 500 words, please demonstrate:
    • the applicant’s research and leadership excellence
    • the synergy between the applicant, their research, the supervisor and the institution
    • how a Banting Fellowship (and this research opportunity) will enhance the applicant’s career trajectory
  • Identify the relevant agency (NSERC, CIHR, SSHRC)
  • If you are unable to provide any of the above, please provide a detailed explanation*

Expressions of Interest will be evaluated on the synergy between the applicant, the supervisor and the research environment, the quality of the proposed research program, and the research excellence and leadership in the research domain of both the applicant and supervisor.

You are encouraged to read all the information in the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships’ application guide before preparing an Expression of Interest.

Applicants should contact their selected referees to seek their assessment well before the applicant’s deadline date. For each referee, applicants must enter their name and contact information and set the deadline date by which the assessments must be submitted through ResearchNet. ResearchNet will then send email requests to the referees, providing them with a secure link for completing their assessment. Referees must complete the various sections of the assessment online. They cannot upload documents to ResearchNet or submit their assessments offline. You must identify and contact your referees well in advance so they have time to evaluate your application properly.

Step 2: Review of Expressions of Interest and Selection of Applicants

Expressions of Interest submissions will be reviewed internally, and selected candidates will be invited to move forward with a full Banting Fellowship application supported by the University of Lethbridge. Only invited applicants are required to complete the online application.

Step 3 - Application Reviews and Feedback

Invited applicants must submit fully completed Banting Fellowship applications to Angela Rosenau in the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs via email at postdoc@uleth.ca by August 10, 2023. Applications must meet Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship Guidelines. You must ensure that your documents meet presentation standards.

Step 4 – Submission of Application to Banting

Invited applicants will be responsible for submitting a complete application via ResearchNet by the deadline of September 17, 2023 (20:00 EDT).
