Dr. Robin Bright (BA '79, BEd '82, MEd '88)

Does Reading Even Matter

Video URL

In a world of endless scrolling through TikTok, X, Instagram, YouTube videos, websites, sound bites and images, does reading even matter anymore? In this talk, Dr. Robin Bright argues that understanding how we read, how we learn to read and what reading can do for us is more important than ever. Whether you are an avid reader, someone who has not picked up a book for years or an educator, there is value in studying reading and readers for both cognitive and social health.

Dr. Robin Bright’s passion for how children develop as readers and writers began when she was a modern languages major in her undergraduate years and as a student teacher in the Faculty of Education at the University of Lethbridge. These experiences led her to a 10-year teaching career, mostly at the grade-one level, and then to choose a life as a researcher, writer and teacher educator working with preservice teachers, practicing teachers, parents, children and colleagues. She was recognized with the University of Lethbridge Distinguished Teaching Award, as the Board of Governors Teaching Chair, and an Alumni Honour Society recipient and says such recognition is only possible with the kindness and support of colleagues, students and family. Dr. Bright researches and teaches both undergraduate and graduate students in the areas of Language and Literacy, Early Childhood/Elementary Education, Professional Development in Literacy, Writing, and Children’s and Young Adult Literature. She is the author of several books on language and literacy development including, most recently, Sometimes Reading is Hard: Using Decoding, Vocabulary, and Comprehension Strategies to Inspire Fluent, Passionate, Lifelong Readers (2021).
