New President | University of Lethbridge

A university founded by the citizens of southern Alberta, connection to community has always been at the heart of the University of Lethbridge. Now in its 55th year, an exciting opportunity exists for a community leader to serve as ULethbridge’s 15th chancellor.

The chancellor’s role is integral to the University and its mission. A leading advocate for the University, the chancellor has a strong interest in university-community affairs and education. Nominations for this volunteer position are open until Nov. 30, 2022.

The chancellor presides over all degree-conferring ceremonies of the university and confers the degrees.

The chancellor chairs the Senate, acts as an ex-officio member of the Board of Governors and represents the university at ceremonial occasions.

The chancellor represents the public interest in the University.

“It’s been said that education is the new buffalo that sustains and empowers our young Indigenous learners. I am a firm believer that knowledge provides the tool to make sound decisions to further careers and provide support to underserved communities.

While there is still a lot of work to be done, Ulethbridge continues to lead and focus on diversity, equity and inclusiveness. I have been very fortunate to be a part of a strong team, starting with our President Mike Mahon, and all staff. We continue to seek opportunities and innovations to align with our student population and to strengthen our community partnerships.

The past four years have been very rewarding, and I will leave this role with a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. It has been the highest honour to serve as the first Indigenous chancellor in the University’s history.”

About the role of Chancellor

The chancellor is elected by the University Senate and is permitted by Alberta government legislation to serve only one term.
Nominees must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
This is a volunteer position with no remuneration. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.
The chancellor must have significant time to apply to the considerable duties involved.
The University of Lethbridge selects on demonstrated record, including commitment to Indigenization, equity, diversity and inclusion.

Chancellor Recruitment Process

The current chancellor will complete his term March 15, 2023, and cannot be reappointed (as per the Post-Secondary Learning Act). The Chancellor Search Committee (CSC) has been tasked to conduct a search for the next chancellor. The role of the committee is to solicit and receive nominations, evaluate candidates and make a recommendation to the Senate. The submission and review process will be treated as strictly confidential.

Step 1: Submissions must be sent to the Governance Office by email, no later than 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 30, 2022. Receipt of all submissions will be acknowledged by email. The Senate welcomes and encourages nominations of candidates.

Step 2: The Chancellor Search Committee will identify its final recommendation to Senate.

Step 3: Senate will meet to discuss approving the recommendation.

Step 4: The successful candidate takes office March 16, 2023.

Step 5: All other candidates will be notified of the final selection by the committee Chair.
