Program description

The BN After Degree is a 24-month continuous program starting in September of each year and is a collaborative program offered by the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge Polytechnic. New applicants apply directly to the University of Lethbridge. Newly admitted students will register in and attend courses at Lethbridge Polytechnic for the first two semesters of the program. For the remaining semesters of the program, students will register in and attend courses at the University of Lethbridge.

The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Lethbridge strives to prepare excellent Nursing graduates by fostering the development of innovative clinical decision making, diagnostic reasoning, interpersonal skills, leadership behaviours, and technical knowledge and skills. Students who have an approved degree from a recognized university may choose to complete either the Bachelor of Nursing After Degree program, or the 40-course Bachelor of Nursing program.

Successful completion of the program earns the student a Bachelor of Nursing (BN) degree. The program provides the essential background to write the Canadian licensure exam to become a Registered Nurse (RN).

The BN After Degree program only has a Fall (September) intake. The deadline to apply for admission is January 5.

New for Fall 2027 admission:

  • An approved undergraduate degree (a minimum of 30 or more courses [90.0 credit hours] from a recognized degree-granting institution).
  • Human Anatomy and Physiology, 6.0 credit hours (two term courses) with a minimum converted grade of B- (on the ULethbridge 4.0 scale) completed within the last seven years.
  • Statistics, 3.0 credit hours (one term course) with a minimum converted grade of B- (on the ULethbridge 4.0 scale) completed within the last seven years.
  • Fine Arts or Humanities courses, 3.0 credit hours (one term course)
  • Social science courses, 6.0 credit hours (two term courses)
  • Proof of Spoken English Language Proficiency and English Language Proficiency
  • All required courses must be completed by the end of the fall term prior to the January 5 application deadline. Applicants completing Anatomy & Physiology at ULethbridge may be permitted to complete these 6.0 credits during the fall/winter term of the application year.

Asynchronous Virtual Interviews:

  • A selection of qualified applicants will be invited to participate in an asynchronous virtual interview in February.
  • Preference may be given to applicants who have completed a minium of 30.0 credit hours at ULethbridge.
  • Applicants invited to interview must meet a converted average of 3.00 (on the ULethbridge 4.0 scale). Pre-interview rankings will be calculated using:
    • Grades received in Human Anatomy & Physiology (6.0 credits) and Statistics (3.0 credits), and
    • Grades from the terms containing the most recent 17 graded university-level subjects.
  • For approved applicants completing Anatomy & Physiology at ULethbridge over the fall/winter terms, pre-interview rankings will be calculated using:
    • Grades received in Human Anatomy & Physiology (3.0 credits) and Statistics (3.0 credits), and
    • Grades from the terms containing the most recent 18 graded university-level subjects.

Admission Decisions:

  • Final admission decisions will be made after the interview process, based on a combined ranking that considers both the pre-interview admission average (50% weighting) and interview results (50% weighting).

The Faculty of Health Sciences will consider a limited number of exceptionally qualified applicants with previous health care experience, who meet BNAD admission requirements, but are not competitive on a case-by case basis. Applicants approved through the previous health care experience admissions pathway who are invited to interview must meet a converted average of 2.50 (on the ULethbridge 4.0 scale). Applicants who are seeking admission based on this experience should submit the online application as normal and must submit the following documents by the January 15 decision document deadline:

  • A letter of intent describing the nature of previous work experience as it relates to nursing and the reason for pursuing nursing
  • A letter of reference from an employer; and
  • A resume detailing relevant work, volunteer and life experience.

Indigenous Admission:

Applicants who meet all admission requirements and have submitted their Attestation of Indigenous Identity Form - students by the decision document deadline will have consideration designed to help address the traditional underrepresentation of Indigenous people in health professions. It is the goal of the Faculty of Health Sciences to enroll a minimum of 10% qualified Indigenous applicants per admission cycle.

Tuition & fees

Due to the collaborative nature of the BN After Degree program, students must pay tuition and fees at Lethbridge Polytechnic for the first two semesters of the program (plus one course in the Fall term at the U of L). Tuition and fees for the remainder of the program are paid to the University of Lethbridge.
