Chin Chin by Anu Adeosun
Chin Chin
Country: Nigeria
Prep. time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 20 minutes
Ingredients:
-
2 cups all purpose flour
-
1/2 cup sugar
-
A pinch of salt
-
1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
-
1/2 tsp of ground nutmeg
-
1 large egg
-
5 to 6 tbs of milk
-
2 1/2 tbs of butter (melted)
-
Oil for frying
Steps:
- Mix the flour, baking powder, sugar, and nutmeg together in a bowl
- Add the egg, melted butter and milk to the dry mixture and mix together until a dough is formed.
- Knead the dough for a couple of minutes (about 2 to 4 minutes)
- Cover with a kitchen towel and allow the dough to rest for 5-7 minutes.
- Roll the dough out into a sheet of about a 1/4 to 1/6 inch thickness and use a pizza cutter or a knife to cut the dough into tiny pea-size pieces. Sprinkle some flour to prevent pieces from sticking together.
- Preheat some oil in a pan - enough to deep fry the chin chin and fry until golden brown.
- Allow to cool completely before serving.
- Enjoy the crunchy goodness!
Tips/Tricks:
To prevent your chin chin from soaking up oil, ensure the temperature is right. Here's how to know: put 1 or 2 pieces of chin chin in the oil. If oil bubbles and the piece of chin chin floats to the surface immediately, then the oil is ready for frying!
Why this recipe?

I am sharing this recipe because Chin Chin is a popular snack that could be entirely sweet or a little savory depending on your preference. Like many snacks in Nigeria, its name is coined from doubling the first word which I think is funny! Examples of other snacks with double words are puff puff and kuli kuli...LOL!
