Growth in English Department is up 20% since 2023

October 24, 2025 — The University of Lethbridge Department of English has posted the fastest-growing enrolment on campus, with overall registrations up 20 percent since 2023. The increase marks two consecutive years of steady expansion, reflecting both strong student demand and the department’s renewed emphasis on creative, inclusive, and interdisciplinary teaching.

That growth is particularly pronounced at the heart of the degree. Second-year enrolments jumped 40 percent between 2024 and 2025, while upper-year courses rose 15 percent over the same period. These trends make English the University’s fastest-growing major and one of the most vibrant departments in Arts & Science.

The department’s recent Academic Quality Assurance Review praised both its innovative teaching and strong student engagement—findings confirmed by the University’s Graduate Outcomes Survey. In that survey, 98 percent of English graduates reported being satisfied or very satisfied with their programmes. Ninety-four percent said the skills they gained were relevant to their work, and 83 percent said the content they studied directly applied to their careers. Every graduate who was seeking employment found a position, placing the department among the top performers on campus.

Behind those outcomes lies a department that has undergone significant renewal. More than half of the English faculty have been hired in the past decade, bringing a wealth of international experience and new areas of expertise. Faculty research ranges from medieval manuscripts to contemporary poetry, from narrative theory to open science, and from the Gothic to children’s literature. Collectively, they publish with leading journals and presses worldwide and bring that cutting-edge research into the classroom.
