Open Mic

Open Mic

Long may you jam!

Sign-up to participate

The Department of English at the University of Lethbridge is proud to be the host of a regular Open Mic that fosters the love of literature and live creative work.

Open Mic is open to all members of the University of Lethbridge community, be they students, faculty or staff. We offer a unique place for artists from all disciplines and levels of experience to perform, while at the same time reveling in the thrill of creativity in motion. Whether you're an emerging writer, an interdisciplinary artist, a musician or simply looking to enjoy some fantastic creative work and have a great time, Open Mic is for you. The atmosphere is always supportive, inclusive and friendly.

Our first jam took place in January 2023 and is hosted by a team of dedicated volunteers, organized by professors Jay Gamble and David Kootnikoff. It began as an extension of our department’s Creative Writing classes and has quickly grown into a campus-wide event. As a not-for-profit event, our remit is to continue to nurture a space where everyone can experience quality live performances. Open Mic is also known for offering “Featured Guests” a chance to go deeper and longer to experiment with new material.

We are very thankful to everyone who has ever supported the Department’s Open Mic and we promise to remain dedicated to providing a space where creativity can live and roam free. Long may you jam!

The University is located on traditional Blackfoot Confederacy territory. We honour the Blackfoot people and their traditional ways of knowing in caring for this land, as well as all Aboriginal peoples who have helped shape and continue to strengthen our University community.
