Mitacs

Catalyzing Innovation Across Canada

Mitacs is a national independent non-profit funding agency that powers research & development creation by connecting private sector with the best post-secondary institutions to solve organizational challenges — in Canada and internationally. For more than 20 years, Mitacs has funded cutting-edge research, created job opportunities for graduate students and helped companies reach their goals, achieving results that have bolstered the Canadian economy and impact.

They act as a catalyzing force in the Canadian innovation ecosystem, providing matching funding for projects and connecting highly trained researchers with the businesses, not-for-profits and municipalities that need them. Mitacs is passionate about developing the next generation of researchers helping to fuel Canada’s knowledge-based economy, and provides guidance, training, and support for all academic disciplines and industry sectors.

Mitacs Program Information

Accelerate

Supports collaborative research projects between eligible partner organizations, a faculty member, and a student, postdoctoral, or recent graduate intern.

  • Projects tackle research problems from any discipline or sector
  • Results can be published, or included in a thesis (with partner approval)
  • Flexible project scale beginning at 4 months
  • Can be used by eligible student entrepreneurs to fund research at their own company
  • Please Note! MITACS has confirmed its funding agreements with the Government of Alberta. Previous funding limits for the Accelerate Program have been lifted.

Business Strategy Internship (BSI)

Supports collaborative innovation projects with eligible partner organizations, a faculty member, and a student, postdoctoral, or recent graduate intern.

  • Projects must improve the products, processes, or services of the partner organization
  • Open to all disciplines and sectors
  • Flexible project scale beginning at 4 months
  • Previous cap on project Internship Units has been removed

PDF Accelerate

As of April 1, 2025, Post-Doctoral Fellow funding is available through the Accelerate Program.  

  • Collaborative projects involving a Post-Doctoral Fellow, faculty member, and eligible partner
  • Partner covers part of the internship, typically 50%
  • Researchers seeking to leverage funding for PDFs are eligible for special Internship Unit funding, which offers $20,000 per unit, up to three units per year, for up to three years.
