Pre-review & Refinement of Animal Use Protocol and Amendment Applications

Pre-review of protocols and annual renewals is intended to assist researchers from both a veterinary and administrative perspective, with the goal of refinement and reduction or elimination of provisos that can occur during the full review by the Animal Welfare Committee. The pre-review can expedite the protocol approval process.

The University Veterinarian or designate will review your draft animal use protocol. You will be contacted if there are any suggested or required changes.

Pre-review of Controlled Drug Scientific Application

Any researcher who wishes to use controlled drugs or narcotics for research purposes will need to have a Section 56 Exemption pursuant to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act prior to ordering controlled rugs and/or narcotics. To obtain more information and to download the application form, please visit the Health Canada website to Request to Use Controlled Substances for Scientific Purposes.

Documentation that is required to submit to Health Canada for application:

  • Copy of the current approved animal use protocol
  • Copy of the current approved animal use protocol annual renewal (where applicable)
  • Copy of all current approved animal use protocol amendments (where applicable)
  • Proof of current approval by the Animal Welfare Committee
  • Completed Request to Use Controlled Substances for Scientific Purposes application form with the declaration page sign and dated.

To prevent delays, submit the final application form to Animal Care Services for pre-review prior to submitting to Health Canada. You will be contacted if there are any suggested or required changes. Send the entire completed application, along with the required documentation to exemption@hc-sc.gc.ca. The scientific exemption application process can take a minimum of 8-10 weeks for approval. Once approved, the scientific exemption is valid for 1 year only.

To assist in scientific exemption annual renewal, Animal Care Services will notify you when the current application is 3 months from expiry.

The University is located on traditional Blackfoot Confederacy territory. We honour the Blackfoot people and their traditional ways of knowing in caring for this land, as well as all Aboriginal peoples who have helped shape and continue to strengthen our University community.
