98% of English graduates are satisfied or very satisfied with their programme

Love novels? Poetry? Drama?

Like to write and read?

Maybe English is the major you've been looking for.

At the University of Lethbridge, we teach language and literature written in English from all periods and in all genres: novels to narrative poems; lyrics to literary theory; pre-history to the present day.

You can also practice your writing, whether that's through essays in our regular classes, or participating in our creative writing courses and events.

The quality of our programme is high. In recent surveys, 98% of our graduates reported that they were satisfied or very satisfied with the teaching in our programme, and 84% said it was worth the cost. 83% said that they find the content they learned from us useful in their current jobs. And 94%, the skills we taught them. The unemployment rate among our recent graduates was 0%: ever student who wanted work had found it, two years after graduation (the overall rate for the University of Lethbridge as a whole is 84%).

Not surprisingly, we are also growing quickly. Enrolment in English department courses is up 20% since 2023-2024, and 40% in the last year at second year. Over half the department has worked at the U of L for ten years or less, bringing experience to Lethbridge from universities in Canada, the U.S., U.K., and Europe.

English graduates are well-suited for careers in all areas of the economy — management, education, journalism, law, public relations, health care, and any other business or profession that values clear writing and an ability to interpret and respond to complex texts.
