Counselling Groups and Workshops

Groups | Fall 2025 Offerings

Is Group Counselling Right for Me?

Group counselling can be a powerful and valuable venue for change and growth. Group counselling offers many benefits such as peer support, reduced stigma and isolation, as well as normalization of feelings and experiences. Research indicates that group therapy is just as effective as individual counselling. Before joining a group, you will meet a group facilitator one-on-one to discuss what to expect, group content, and whether or not the group is a right fit for you at this time. More and more students are joining groups for the opportunity to connect with peers and feel less alone! Consider if group is the next step in your wellness journey.

DnD Group. Information in text below.

Roll for Resilience

Who? Students looking to build skills, improve distress tolerance, and make connections via a DnD campaign.

What? “Your party meets in a tavern counselling office”. Roll for Resilience is a therapeutic Dungeons and Dragons group that is being offered to U of L students via Counselling Services. No experience with therapy or DnD is required, only a willingness to participate and a commitment to attend. DnD 5e (2024) will be the format used for the sessions. Participants are not required to have or bring any DnD materials as these will be provided.

Why? Participants can expect to practice skills that are based in therapeutic concepts like acceptance, contacting the present moment, values clarification, committed action, distress tolerance, and more, all accomplished via a DnD campaign run by a counsellor. Participants are also encouraged to bring their own individual goals, such as anxiety management, building social skills, improving self-advocacy, and challenging perceptions about self, among many other possibilities

When: Starting September 26th, 2025 this group will meet Fridays from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. for 10 weeks, excluding reading week.

Where? In person. Location to be confirmed upon registration.

Register: Students can email us at counselling.services@uleth.ca or call 403-317-2845 to register.

Registration Deadline: September 12, 2025.

*Space for this group will be quite limited and there may be a waitlist for participation. The amount of interest shown for this group will help determine how often/many similar groups will be offered in the coming semesters, which could even include summer semesters.

*This is a closed group meaning you must sign up prior to the start date.

SPACE graphic

Creating S P A C E

Who? Students who are looking for an open space to create connections with others.

What? We will agree to a set of principles and behaviours that will foster safety, trust, and respect. We will journal about current and relevant topics. Participants will be asked to share what's in their minds and hearts. We will close our space with a grounding exercise or meditation to help us integrate processing and/or move on with our day. Some topics for exploration could include coping with change, uncertainty, procrastination, boundaries, grief, anger, fear, body image, expectations, etc.

Why? Space is a safe and supportive sharing circle where there is room to explore common life challenges and speak out loud about struggles. We will come together with compassion, to support and empower each other, not advise, fix or judge. In this group we will "hold space" for meaningful connection.

When: Starting September 19th, 2025 this group will meet Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. for 11 weeks, excluding reading week.

Where? In person. Counselling Services AH153.

Register: Students can email us at counselling.services@uleth.ca to register or call at 403-317-2845 for more information.

Registration Deadline: September 5, 2025.

* This is a closed group meaning you must sign up prior to the start date.

Break up boot camp image

Break-Up Boot Camp

Who? Anyone who has ever been in a relationship, friendship, and/or situationship, that didn’t work out- anyone who has ever experienced a broken heart.

What? Exploring the 7 stages of a break-up, this group designed to dig deep into the experiences we go through after the end of a relationship including attachment science, boundaries, and emotional regulation. We will come together, not to “rehash” or “vent” about our ex’s, but to examine and make sense of our own thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, following a break-up and exploring the science behind what drives them.

Why? Because, in the words of Amy Chan, “It’s never just about the ex”. Most relationships are not THE ONE, but learning how your brain reacts in love and relationships is essential to discovering what it is you are looking for in a partner, and within yourself. This group will help you to understand the big emotions you might be having at the end of a relationship and learn that those feelings, actually might make sense. Starting to recognize your own patterns in relationships and learning how to set healthy boundaries will help you foster new, healthier relationships with yourself and others.

When: Starting October 21st, 2025 this group will meet Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for 7 weeks, excluding reading week.

Where?  In person. Location to be confirmed upon registration.

Register: Students can email us at counselling.services@uleth.ca to register or call at 403-317-2845 for more information.

Registration Deadline: October 7, 2025.

* This is a closed group meaning you must sign up prior to the start date.

Drop in group on Wednesdays for stress management.

Regulate U: Skills for Stress & Overwhelm

This workshop is available during Walk-in-Wednesday's.

Who? This drop-in workshop is open to all U of L students who are seeking additional support managing stress, regulating emotions, and coping with feeling overwhelmed. Whether you're navigating academic pressures, personal challenges, or just feeling emotionally and physically drained - this space is for you! No prior experience with coping practices is necessary, and you’re welcome to attend whether you’re new to counselling or already connected to supports on campus.

What? Regulate U is a 60-minute, drop-in, skill-building workshop designed to help you explore and practice a range of emotional, somatic (body-based), and cognitive coping strategies. Through guided exercises and informal discussion, we’ll cover:

  • Mindfulness practices to help you stay present and steady in moments of overwhelm.
  • Grounding techniques to anchor yourself when emotions feel too intense or when you're disconnected from your body or surroundings.
  • Sensory regulation tools that use your senses to soothe and calm your nervous system.
  • Cognitive coping skills to gently shift unhelpful thought patterns and increase a sense of control.
  • It's a small, supportive, no-pressure space to learn, experiment, and take away tools that can help you feel a little more grounded in your everyday life.

You’ll leave with practical, easy-to-use strategies you can return to in everyday life- before a big exam, after a tough conversation, or when navigating anxious thoughts.

Why? University life can be exciting and meaningful, but also incredibly demanding on your mental and emotional resources. When stressors pile up, it’s easy to feel dysregulated- emotionally, physically, and mentally. This workshop offers a chance to intentionally slow down, learn how your nervous system responds to stress, and discover techniques to help you reconnect to calm, clarity, and resilience. By developing skills that integrate the mind and body, you can better manage daily stress, enhance emotional regulation, and improve overall wellbeing.

When? Starting September 17th, 2025 this group will meet Wednesdays from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. for 8 weeks, excluding reading week.

Where? In person. Counselling Services AH153.

Register: Students can register in-person during Walk-in Wednesday's, email us at counselling.services@uleth.ca to pre-register or call at 403-317-2845 for more information. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged.

Registration Deadline: 11:30 a.m. each Wednesday the workshop is offered.
