PURSUE WOMEN & GENDER STUDIES

Our department draws on a vibrant community of scholars and activists both inside and outside the university to explore a wide range of issues. Using feminist theory and research methodologies, women and gender studies examine the historical and contemporary conditions of women and men in society.

As a student in this program, you will broaden your knowledge of women’s lives, bodies, experiences, labour and scholarship. You’ll also explore feminism as an influential political and global social movement that has generated significant change in all aspects of daily life for men and women.

We encourage all students to enroll in women and gender studies classes to discover enlightening perspectives applicable to your chosen field of study. By participating in these classes, you will develop an in-depth understanding of how current and historical events, ideas and institutions have been structured by gender, ethnicity, race, age, ability, class and sexuality.

Broaden your understanding of the world; you will develop strong critical, analytical and “big picture” thinking skills. This program will enhance your ability to apply your knowledge and expertise across the disciplines while you develop your intellectual, written and oral communication skills, as well as expand your academic and scholarly knowledge.

These abilities are transferable to virtually any industry or occupation and are highly sought after in the working world. Moreover, all scholarly disciplines have been influenced by theories and ideas developed within women and gender studies thus your familiarity with the scholarship in the field will prepare you well for any graduate endeavours you wish to pursue after you complete your undergraduate degree.

Undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts and Science have several special opportunities available, including:

  • Co-operative Education
  • Applied Studies
  • Independent Studies
  • Undergraduate Honours Thesis
  • Participation in Conferences
  • Co-authorship of papers/publications
  • Involvement with professors on research projects

I absolutely love everything about the WGST department at the University of Lethbridge. In my WGST classes, I am surrounded by like-minded and passionate people and as a result, I have been exposed to incredible ideas that have changed the way I see the world. The small class sizes allow for supportive environments during discussions and the chance to talk to professors outside of class, which is so invaluable. The course content is so fascinating; I have a better idea of what I would like to do after graduation as a result of my WGST classes. I have met amazing people and am constantly studying what I am passionate about, which is so exciting!
