Traditional knowledge
"Indian bread root" has been a staple food source for the Niisitapi. The tuberous root is collected and can be dried or used promptly. Common preparations include pounding into a powder to be mixed into soups or mixed with fat for a doughy snack.
Description
Low-growing perennial (<50 cm) with a large tuberous root, dense silky white hairs throughout, and leaves divided into five leaflets on long stalks. Produces dense spikes of purple pea-like flowers above the foliage.
