Oki — Welcome to Iniskim Sacred Buffalo Stone
The University of Lethbridge pays respect to the Blackfoot people — past, present and future — while recognizing and honouring their rich cultural heritage, beliefs and relationship to the land. Our Blackfoot name is Iniskim, meaning Sacred Buffalo Stone, and was gifted to the University by Elder Bruce Wolf Child in 2002.
Since we opened our doors in 1967, Indigenous culture has been woven into the fabric of the University, enriching programming, teaching and research, and creating a university where students find community, support and success.
Iniskim acknowledges that we are gathered on the lands of the Blackfoot people — Siksikaitsitapii, of the Canadian Plains, compromised of the Kainai, Apaatohsipiikani, Siksika and Amsskapiipiikani Nations. The City of Lethbridge is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region III.
