Course Description:

This course introduces students to Japan and Japanese international relations up to contemporary times. Our survey begins with an introduction to Japanese politics and society, and examines Japan’s relations with the United States, Canada, and East Asian countries. Our studies will draw from perspectives of international relations, politics, economics, and social and intellectual history. Through live videoconferencing, this course brings together instructors and students from both Tokyo and Lethbridge, to engage in interactive lectures and discussion, supported by readings, videos, and news material.

In our Tuesday class, Dr. Ishizawa will lecture on Japan and Japanese relations with the U.S. and East Asian countries. Thursday lectures will be given by Dr. Fujiwara on relations between Japan and Canada from the 19th century to contemporary times.
