Hall, Ronald

Department of Philosophy
1924 to 2019

Ron Hall was among the first faculty of the University of Lethbridge. His graduate work was done at the University of Alberta and the University of Toronto. Prior to beginning his career at the University of Lethbridge, Ron taught philosophy at Laurentian University. He was an advocate for liberal arts education and had a strong teaching focus. Ron was an educator who saw the world as being filled with exciting opportunities for exploration. He maintained cherished friendships with his colleagues and students.

Several years after retiring in 1986, Ron moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, where he lived until 2015. He engaged the city as an explorer who comprehensively photographed along his way. In Vancouver, he became a photographer documentarian by walking and traveling on public transit throughout the city. His photographic record of the city is substantial. He also documented his many trips outside of Vancouver.

He loved the arts and cultivated a deep interest in music and film throughout his life. During his years in Vancouver, Ron attended many events, such as those related to Vancouver International Film Festival, Vancouver Opera, Vancouver Jazz Festival, Vancouver Art Gallery, and Bard on the Beach. He attended many concerts, theatre productions, street festivals, and parades, such as Vancouver Pride Parade and the Chinese New Year Parade.

In 2015, Ron moved to a residence at Cormorant Island Health Centre in Alert Bay, B.C. to be close to his family. There he found a beautiful new community where, among his many interests, he experienced joy through painting. In his last years between 2015 and 2019, Ron seemed to reinvent himself in this new community. He was truly a lifelong learner. Through his life, and up until his final days, he always reminded of the importance of laughing.
