DWYER

Dr. Robert J. (B0b) Dwyer passed away on Sunday April 19, 1987 at St. Michael’s hospital, at the age of 68 years.

Born in 1919, Dr. Dwyer received a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Missouri in 1957. He taught at universities in his native United States before joining the faculty at the University of Lethbridge in 1967. Dr. Dwyer held the rank of Professor Emeritus and served for a time as Chairman of the Sociology Department. He retired in 1982.

Dwyer served in the Second World War with great distinction. He received numerous military decorations for his bravery as a paratrooper in the United States celebrated 82nd Airborne Division. He held the rank of First Lieutenant. Wounded during the invasion of Sicily in 1943, Dwyer recovered in time to parachute into Normandy the night before the main assault by Allied forces on D-Day. Again wounded, he recovered and returned to combat at Arnheim, only to be wounded a third time. Dwyer’s name appears in Cornelius Ryan’s book A Bridge Too Far.

Bob was, in his time, a fine athlete, excelling in Track and Field during his student days, and Tennis until recently. He was well known and respected in Lethbridge tennis circles. As well as being a skilled player, he was a model of good sportsmanship and civilized behaviour.

He is survived by his daughters Katy, Nancy, Jenny, and Molly, all living in the United States, and Becky in Lethbridge.

A reception in Bob's honour was held April 25th at 634 - 9th St. South.
