Program description

Graduate Certificate in Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Gain advanced training in public health research methods and analysis
Design, coordinate, execute, analyze and report on studies related to outbreaks, endemic infection and chronic disease
Analyze large public health data sets
Conduct systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, prospective cohort studies, case-control studies, diagnostic testing studies,
Use biostatistical methods and R software to examine findings

Courses are synchronous, online. Coursework (synchronous online delivery) may be considered for transfer credit to the Public Health Specialization in the Master of Science degree program with a major in Health Sciences for students who are admitted to that program at a later date.

Learning outcomes
  • Derive and apply solutions from research to real life problems in public health.
  • Model the factors that contribute to the emergence and spread of infectious disease, and learn how infectious disease can be prevented and controlled.
  • Understand how social networks, patterns of travel, living conditions, and climate/season interact to influence infectious disease, health behaviour, and chronic disease in rural and urban populations. Learn to write grants and proposals to support public health research.
  • Design, execute, and manage observational and experimental epidemiologic studies.
  • Design, execute, and manage systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and other types of knowledge synthesis projects.
  • Design biostatistical analyses for different types of health studies.
  • Interpret research findings using biostatistical methods.
  • Learn to disseminate research findings to decision-makers, industry, and health systems to inform evidence-based practices using accessible, plain language.
International applicants

Because this is a part-time program, graduates from this program are not be eligible to apply for a post-graduation work permit.

Additional information

Applicants must normally meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Hold a baccalaureate degree (i.e. undergraduate degree) from a recognized degree-granting institution
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 3.00 (based on the ULethbridge 4.00 scale) on the last 20 graded university-level term courses (60.0 credit hours)
  • Completed 3.0 credit university-level statistics course
  • Recommended background is a 3.0 credit hour epidemiology course
  • Demonstrate English Language Proficiency (ELP) for graduate students

Submit your complete application by midnight (MST/MDT) on the deadline date.

Step 3: Arrange for Official Documents

Official documents (e.g., transcripts, English language proficiency test scores) are required prior to registration.
Note: Applicants who have attended or are currently attending an institution participating in ApplyAlberta do not need to arrange for official transcripts.

Step 4: Admission Decision Process

The relevant Graduate Program Committee reviews your application and makes an admission decision. This may take from six to 10 weeks after your program's application deadline.

*Note: Students who are graduates of non-Canadian universities must provide notarized English translations of all documents not in the English language.

Unofficial Transcripts

You must upload and submit your unofficial transcripts, including proof of graduation for your completed degree(s) and transcripts of all post-baccalaureate work, if any, via the online application system.

Official Transcripts

You must also arrange for your official transcripts to be sent to the Registrar’s Office. ULethbridge must receive your official transcripts prior to course registration.

Applicants who have attended or are currently attending institutions NOT participating in ApplyAlberta must arrange to have official transcripts sent directly from the issuing institution to the Admissions Office. A list of participating institutions is available at applyalberta.ca.

English Language Proficiency (ELP) for graduate students

English is the primary language of instruction and communication at the University of Lethbridge. Prior to registration, all applicants to the School of Graduate Studies must demonstrate English Language Proficiency (ELP) sufficient to meet the demands of classroom instruction, written assignments, research, and participation in tutorials and discussions, regardless of their citizenship or country of origin. This program consists of four graduate-level courses. Course descriptions are available in the course catalogue. Please see the dynamic schedule on the Registrar's Office website to see when courses are delivered.

One elective course:

Students can choose a course that furthers their skills in applied research, or apply the skills they have gained in a graduate course on infectious disease outbreaks and control.
