Major in Philosophy
To complete a Major in Philosophy, students must complete 14 courses in Philosophy and Logic, including:
Two of (Logic):
- 1000 Critical Thinking and Argumentation I
- 1050 Formal Logic I
- 2200 Critical Thinking and Argumentation II
- 2003 Formal Logic II
- 3500 Logic, Reasoning, Critical Thinking and Argumentation (Series)
Two of (History of Philosophy):
- 2010 Ancient Philosophy
- 2750 History of Philosophy (Series)
- 3150 Philosophical Traditions (Series)
- 3550 Important Figures in Philosophy (Series)
Two of (Practical Philosophy at the 2000-level):
- 2300 Introduction to Democratic Leadership
- 2001 Introduction to Ethics
- 2500 Introduction to Social and Political Philosophy
- 2560 Introduction to Feminist Philosophy
- 2236 Environmental Philosophy
Two of (Theoretical Philosophy at the 2000-level):
- 2400 Introduction to Philosophy of Language
- 2002 Belief, Truth, and Paradox
- 2220 Introduction to Philosophy of Mind
- 2700 Introduction to Philosophy of Science
- 2600 Introduction to Theory of Knowledge (Epistemology)
- 2210 Philosophy of Religion
Six additional courses (18.0 credit hours) in Philosophy or Logic.
At least six courses (18.0 credit hours) of the 14 courses must be at the 3000-level or 4000-level.
At least one course (3.0 credit hours) of the 14 courses must be at the 4000-level.
No more than two Independent Studies Courses (PHIL 1990, 2990, 2990, 4990) can be counted toward the Major.
Notes:
- Offerings in PHIL 2000 (Series) or PHIL 3000 (Series) may be assigned to one of the above lists (History, Practical, or Theoretical) at the time of scheduling. Please refer to the current term timetable.
- Students should take courses from as many instructors as possible, since the views of instructors on any given topic may vary significantly.
- Students considering graduate study in philosophy are advised to take courses in both Critical Thinking and Argumentation (LOGI 1000, LOGI 2200, LOGI 3500) and Formal Logic (LOGI 1050, LOGI 2003, LOGI 3500), and to complete the (6.0 credit) Honours Thesis (PHIL 4995 or LOGI 4995).
