Program description

NOTE: Due to College of Alberta Psychologists updates the MEd Counselling Psychology program will transition to the Master of Clinical and Counselling Psychology.

We do not anticipate an intake to the MEd Counselling Psychology program in 2027.

The Master of Clinical and Counselling Psychology program is pending ministerial approval and more details will be provided when possible. Given previous timelines regarding ministerial approvals, the Faculty of Education anticipates the program will likely receive approval and by able to accept students for a 2027 start date. You are advised to check back regularly as this timeline is subject to change.

In the MEd(Counselling Psychology), you'll complete coursework, a practicum and Culminating Activity (thesis, project or Capstone) to:

  • understand and acquire communication skills in interpersonal and counselling contexts
  • learn historical and theoretical foundations in counselling psychology
  • develop a planning and implementation framework for client change interventions in counselling psychology
  • become familiar with a variety of counselling assessment procedures
  • understand the process of career counselling
  • address professional and ethical issues in counselling psychology practice, science and regulation
  • develop an understanding of gender and cultural issues in counselling
  • experience supervised practice in counselling psychology settings

You do not require a teaching background for admission to this program.

Year One: attend full-time, on-campus

Year Two: complete practicum placements and culminating activity remotely, if desired, with limited on-campus attendance
