Master of Clinical and Counselling Psychology and Master of Counselling FAQ

The Master of Clinical and Counselling Psychology program is an on-campus two-year program and provides the necessary graduate coursework for Registered Psychologist status with the College of Alberta Psychologists.  

  • Additional requirements beyond a graduate degree are required. See cap.ab.ca for requirements.  

  • This program allows the opportunity for a Capstone, Project or Thesis. Project and Thesis routes typically extend duration of program. 

The Master of Counselling program is a blended-delivery 3-year program that leads to Canadian Certified Counsellor status with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. This program is designed for working professionals. 

Yes, the Master of Clinical and Counselling Psychology program meets the graduate requirements for registration with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP). The Master of Clinical and Counselling Psychology program is currently under review with the College of Alberta Psychologists to have it designated as an approved program pathway.

Note, the Master of Counselling program no longer meets the CAP graduate requirements.  

The Master of Counselling program is designed to meet the requirements for the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. 

Canadian Certified Counsellor

The Canadian Certified Counsellor is a designation granted by the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA). This certification is considered the minimum professional standard in Canada and attests to a level of competency in professional counselling. The Master of Counselling program leads to this designation.

Registered Psychologist

The College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) regulates the psychologist registration process. The Master of Clinical and Counselling Psychology program provides the graduate coursework leading to registration with CAP. Beyond the completion of your graduate program, registration with CAP also requires undergraduate psychology courses, supervised clinical hours, and EPPP and LEAP exams  

You are responsible for meeting requirements for registering as established by CAP or the corresponding professional designation organization in your province/state. 

The MEd Counselling Psychology has been suspended and is replaced by the Master of Clinical and Counselling Psychology program. 

We worked closely with the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) in the creation of the Master of Clinical and Counselling Psychology (MCCP) program to ensure that it meets the graduate requirements for individuals intending to pursue Registered Psychologist status in Alberta. The MCCP has been approved by CAP and we are waiting for the Memorandum of Understanding to be signed. We anticipate this will be in place in the coming weeks and the information will be posted on the MCCP and CAP websites.

The 2027/2028 Fee Schedules have not yet been approved. The following figures include tuition and miscellaneous fees. This is a draft and is subject to change but may prove useful for planning purposes. 

Domestic students: Year One $15,054, Year Two $12,988 based on completion of Capstone.

International students: Year One $28,554, Year Two $24,328 based on completion of Capstone.

Relevant experiences will include activities across the lifespan that are:  

  • counselling-related (i.e., crisis line, peer counselling, addictions counselling, group counselling), 
  • human services or helping/other activities (i.e., advising, assisting at shelters, case management, etc.).
  • leadership/supervisory (i.e., teaching, coaching, leading youth groups, summer camps, organized recreational activities, people management), 
  • minimal consideration for public facing experience (e.g., dealing with challenging interpersonal situations)

Relevant experiences should involve person-to-person and/or group helping relationships in which the applicant plays a facilitative role in learning, personal and emotional growth, and/or psychological development. 

It is also important to ensure that your experience affords you the ability to provide references who are well situated to comment on your potential success in the field of clinical and counselling psychology. That means it is desirable to have supervisors who are in the field of counselling psychology so they can speak to your likely success in this particular field within the reference letter.
