Welcome Students to the Faculty of Education

January 17, 2020

We are committed to the well-being of our students and partners in determining what the future might look like in the Faculty of Education. As you may be aware, the University of Lethbridge will offer instruction and support by way of distance delivery in the Spring and Summer 2021 semester. With this in mind—and with the contours of the COVID-19 guidelines in place—we aspire to move forward responsibly delivering online the quality of instruction and support that our teacher preparation program is known for.

Education Electives

With the announcement by the University of Lethbridge of moving to remote instruction for the Spring and Summer 2021 term, all education electives will be offered via distance delivery. Individual instructors will plan accordingly and will communicate expectations for the course to registered students. Some instructors may choose to have scheduled virtual meetings during assigned class times and others may not. There will be no expectations for students to be on campus or in person for any of the course activities.

Education 2500

For the Spring and Summer 2021 semester, Education 2500 will be a robust look at the teaching profession and provide meaningful experiences aimed at exploring this exciting field. There will be NO in school practicum component to this course regardless of whether K-12 schools are teaching face to face or remotely. In place of this practicum, instructors will be planning various forms of virtual experiences for students enhancing their understanding of important educational issues. For further information on what the Education 2500 distance delivery course will be like please contact Aaron Stout, Education 2500 Coordinator, at aaron.stout@uleth.ca. For more programmatic inquiries, please contact Student Program Services at: edu.sps@uleth.ca.

Professional Semester II

Professional Semester II will begin in January with an online Orientation. More information about the Orientation will be emailed to students who are registered in the PS II placeholder. PS II has three components: 1) approximately 7-weeks of coursework, 2) approximately 6-weeks of practicum, and 3) a 3-hour culmination meeting at the end of the semester. Professional Semester II coursework will be delivered by distance from January to the beginning of March. Student teachers can expect—as far as we know as of December 2020, as is feasible—to be placed in a school-based practicum in March and April in the area in which they live. PS II students living outside of Zones 5 (Calgary and area) and Zone 6 (Lethbridge and area) who will be attending PS II practicum in Spring will be contacted by Field Experiences with further information regarding your practicum placement.

Student Teachers should be aware that there is a possibility that distant education procedures will be in effect to teach and meet the learning needs of students in their practicum. Student Teachers accept that they will need to adopt the distance delivery mode and teacher expectations in place at that school for the Spring semester (e.g., distance delivery teaching, working within the school building, or working from home).

If a PS II Student decides not to continue in PS II before the start of the semester, the student must withdraw from the PS II placeholder and can register in PS II in Spring 2022. If a PS II Student decides not to continue after the start of the semester, the student must immediately contact Student Program Services at: edu.sps@uleth.ca.

In the event that a school-based practicum is not possible in March and April, Student Teachers will participate in distance delivery experiential learning to simulate a practicum experience.

If you have any questions about PS II, please send an email to Student Program Services: edu.sps@uleth.ca. Due to the  high number of emails received the response time may be delayed. We will answer your email on a first-come, first-served basis, and as soon as possible.

Professional Semester III

The Faculty of Education is proceeding with PS III for the Spring. Intern Teachers have been made aware that there is a possibility that distant education procedures will be in effect to teach and meet the learning needs of students in their Spring practicum. Intern Teachers accept that they will need to adopt the distancy delivery mode and teacher expectations in place at that school for the Spring semester (e.g., distance delivery teaching, working within the school building, or working from home).

It will be important for intern teachers to follow all of the COVID-19 safety protocols set up in their school and division. Stay in contact with your Teacher Mentor and University Consultant if you have any questions. The University of Lethbridge is providing all student interns with masks. These will be mailed to you as soon as they are available. As things will be evolving it is important for teacher interns to be flexible in their teaching assignment and delivery method.

If you have any questions about PS III, please send an email to: edu.fieldexp@uleth.ca. Due to the high number of emails received the response time may be delayed. We will answer your email on a first-come, first-served basis, and as soon as possible.
