2017 COHT & I-CYS Book Launch

The Centre for Oral History and Tradition and the Institute for Child and Youth Studies were proud and honoured to present a joint book launch for Dr. Heidi MacDonald (U of L Dept. of History, previous director of COHT) and Dr. Kristine Alexander (U of L Dept. of History, Director of I-CYS) to celebrate the publication of their new books. We had a great turnout both for 6pm to meet the authors and for their talks and readings at 7pm on Dec 7, 2017. Books were available for purchase at the event thanks to the U of L Bookstore and sold out completely!

Please see this link for more information on Dr. MacDonald's book, Vatican II and Beyond: The Changing Mission and Identity of Canadian Women Religious

"This book focuses on the new transnational networks, feminist concepts, professionalization of religious life, and complex political landscapes that emerged during this period of drastic transition as women religious sought to reconstruct identities, redefine roles, and signify vision and mission at both the personal and collective levels."

Please see this link for more information on Dr. Alexander's book, Guiding Modern Girls: Girlhood, Empire, and Internationalism in the 1920s and 1930s

"The British-based Guide movement attracted more than a million members in over forty countries during the interwar years. Its success, however, was neither simple nor straightforward. Using an innovative multi-sited approach, Kristine Alexander digs deeper to analyze the ways in which Guiding sought to mould young people in England, Canada, and India."

Thank you to the sponsors of this event, including the Women Scholar's Speaker Series, President's Office, Faculty of Arts & Science, the Office for Research and Innovation Services, the U of L Bookstore, and UBC Press.

Thank you also to UBC Press for highlighting this event on your site: https://www.ubcpress.ca/guiding-modern-girls
