GLER

What is the GLER?

In keeping with the liberal arts focus of the University, all students in undergraduate degree programs must complete the General Liberal Education Requirement (GLER). The GLER ensures that students gain knowledge, experience, and perspective from a wide variety of areas. The GLER is an opportunity to explore new disciplines, to investigate career paths, and to develop valuable skills to complement your degree.

Remember: If you are hesitant about trying new courses, you may designate them as credit/non-credit (see the Undergraduate Calendar for more information on this option).

How do I complete the GLER?

For most students, the GLER consists of 12 courses, including 4 from each of List I (Fine Arts/Humanities), List II (Social Sciences), and List III (Sciences). Some programs, such as post-diploma and second degree programs, have a modified GLER. You can find complete information on your General Liberal Education Requirement in your program planning guide or from an academic advisor.

Courses from your major may count towards the GLER, but you may not use more than four courses from one department towards the GLER.

How do I know which designation a specific course has?

Only Arts & Science courses have designations as fine arts/humanities, social sciences, or sciences. Course designations can be found in the notes under the course listing in the timetable.
