Missing a Class or Multiple Classes
What do I do if I’ve missed a class?
Before class, if possible, email your instructor. Check the course outline to see what you will be missing that day and complete all of the pre-readings if you have not already done so. If possible before class, ask a friend or classmate for notes, but remember it is not their responsibility to take notes for you. If you cannot reach them before class, try asking for notes afterwards. Do not ask your instructor, “What did I miss?” It is your responsibility to catch up on any missed lectures/assignments/quizzes, etc.
I missed class and I don't know anyone I can ask for notes, what should I do?
Check the course Moodle page for any notes or handouts first. If there is nothing available, try asking the people you sit next to, or close to, in class. Remember they are not under an obligation to let you use their notes, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.
What do I do if I was sick and missed a lot of classes and assignments?
This can be a real problem, especially at the Calgary Campus where one week of classes is condensed into three or four hours per week. We have a couple of options to get you back on track:
- The first step is to talk to your instructor(s), preferably while you are sick, who may be able to help you with extended deadlines. It is better to do this sooner rather than later to avoid falling too far behind.
- Look into some of the student service options for students like tutoring, a learning strategist, etc. Contact the Student Services Coordinator for more information.
- Ask a friend or classmate who is doing well in the class for help.
If you are feeling worried that none of the steps above are working and you cannot get caught up, especially late in the semester, talk to your academic advisor as soon as you can. They can help you contact professors and may advocate on your behalf, especially if you are able to provide proof of why you were away (e.g., a doctor’s note).
I had to leave school because of I was sick/had a family emergency/etc., so what do I do now?
If possible, try to let your instructor know—even a quick email is better than nothing. Contact your academic advisor as soon as you can, and they will explain your options to you and advocate on your behalf with instructors if you have provided appropriate documentation.
If you need other kinds of support, contact the Student Services Coordinator who can give you more options and refer you to services you may find helpful.
I have to travel for work and I need to miss class(es), how do I approach the instructor about this?
Work happens, and many of your instructors will understand this. The best option is to talk to your instructors well in advance to see your best options for missing class. If you need to miss any major deadlines (tests, presentations, etc.) because you are out of town for work, provide as much advance notice as possible. Remember – it is your responsibility to attend classes and be present for what is discussed. Your instructor may be able to make adjustments for you, but this may not always be the case. Be prepared to do a lot of work to stay caught up while you are absent.
