Program description
The Master of Education (Educational Leadership) program reflects recent shifts in the knowledge base and in the restructuring of educational leadership programs worldwide using a 21st Century professional practice competencies approach that integrates theory and practice. The program particularly reflects the Faculty of Education’s commitment to preparing leaders for schools and school jurisdictions.
This MEd leads to Alberta Education Leadership Quality Standard Certification.
This 25-month long program is offered in a blended delivery format. This includes online courses in fall, winter, and summer semesters, as well as face-to-face courses in July.
See Application Deadlines for intake details.
Individuals seeking teacher certification in the province of Alberta should refer to the Bachelor of Education program.
More than 50% of the courses in this program follow an online delivery format. Please be advised that due to the blended nature of this program, graduates are NOT eligible to apply for a post-graduation work permit after completing this program.
According to a 2013 study, 40 per cent of teachers in Alberta leave the profession within the first five years. “How do we get them to stay? How do we get them to feel valued? One of the biggest variables impacting this is leadership," says Kathryn Desrochers (BSc/BEd ’13, MEd ’21). Kathryn earned the Margaret Haughey Award for Best Thesis of 2020 (Canadian Association for the Study of Educational Administration) and the 2021 Faculty of Education Medal of Merit for her MEd thesis.
